When I use the defroster, then later try to turn on the a/c, it won't come on. I push the button repeatedly and nothing. I try with the fan on, off, everything. Very frustrating. Eventually it comes on. Sometimes literally 5 minutes after driving around in sweltering heat. What am I doing wrong?

The a/c button and the recirculate button will not turn on immediately after using the defroster. If I use the defroster on the way to work, then turn the defroster off when I get to work, later when leaving work these buttons will not illuminate and the a/c doesn't come on. When it finally does minutes later, it works perfectly. I don't believe it to be a defect because of information I have researched. Apparently it is some sort of technology that took something simple and complicated it.

The truck will run the compressor automatically when you have defrost or recirc selected. That being said, the system operates the same way whether its defrosting the windshield or cooling the cabin.

If this happens only after using the defrost mode, all I can think of would be a software glitch.

P.S. I'm assuming you are turning the defrost off and moving the mode selector to full face upon re-entering the pickup.

When you turn on defrost does the AC compressor turn on too?

No idea. The buttons will not light and the fan does not run. Been driving for 35 years and never had a system that decided if it wants to turn on or not. If I push the ac button and turn on the fan, it should work, period.

OP, one thing you need to understand about your truck. The switch isn't a mechanical switch like the old days. It communicates with the truck's computer system which then turns systems on or off. That's the quick/rough explanation. So it may need to be hooked to scanner to track down the issue

Hi ColtsDave,

Sorry you're experiencing this issue with your A/C after using the defroster. Have you contacted your dealership about this concern? I'd be happy to look further into this and reach out to your dealership on your behalf. If this interests you, please send me a private message with your VIN and contact information.

Thank you,

Andraya

Sounds software related. I have noticed on occasion that the button presses on my AC tend to take a few seconds to respond to and every once in a while seems to "hang" for about 15-20 sec before the change takes place. I am taking mine in early next week and would suggest you do the same. No point in buying a new vehicle with factory warranty if your not going to use it when the need arises.
