First Time Towing with 2500 HD

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to comment on the towing capability of the Silverado 2500HD with the Duramax/Allison combination. I had done a lot of research before getting this truck to haul our car trailer and much of it came from Forums such as this one. Everyone who had said it would make a great tow vehicle was absolutely right. We couldn't believe how well this thing hauls, handles and rides. The power on hills is great and the fuel mileage was 50% better than our previous tow vehicle. You just set the cruise control and it does the rest - well, almost.

We had only 800 miles on it when we left for the Detroit Autorama, just ahead of a blizzard in Connecticut, and it was the first time we had towed with it. Another great feature was the lack of sway when passing or being passed by tractor/trailer rigs. There was virtually no noticeable push such as we had experienced in the past. The engine also seemed to get stronger the more miles we put on it. I kept checking the oil level and it didn't change at all in the 2,400 miles we have now driven it.

To say I'm pleased would be an understatement. It's even better than I thought it would be. Thanks for all the advise and suggestions from Forum members.

We finally got tired of 4500 RPMS in second gear at 40MPH climbing grade pulling our 28-foot 5th-wheel RV, so upgraded to a 2003 Silverado 2500HD LT 2WD DuraMax/Allison.

What a ROCK!  Coming home from Phoenix to Minneapolis we deliberately chose steep grade roads to see if we could stress the truck.  It never broke a sweat, even on 10-mile long 7% grades in New Mexico.  Mileage averaged 13MPG (our old truck did good to average 7MPG) for the trip, and no tankful was less than 10MPG.

The LT trim package with dual zone climate control, Bose stereo, XM-Radio, and heated leather seating is pure luxury.  I finally found the perfect truck!
