The Age old debate... Which oil is best?

Recommended Posts

I have run Pennzoil Ultra in my '13 since it had 1000 miles-when I drained the factory fill oil. I had a very slight valve noise from day one with 37 miles on it. After I changed the oil using the Pennzoil Ultra and a Delco oil filter, it has been whisper quiet ever since. I now have 7500 miles on the odometer. My truck seems very content with it.

IMO when it comes to brands any synthetic is great, but what makes a big difference is a quality filter.

Agreed. A good filter makes the world of difference. I run WIX filters in everything. I run Valvoline or AMSOIL, depends on the toy.. Usually full syn. In my special toys I run AMSOIL full synthetic and full syn filter. AMSOIL full syn filter and oil will actually clean out some of the gunk on an engine with alot of miles. I'm a dealer of AMSOIL as well if you would like to try them I can get you dealer cost.

And not to start a fued or be rude, but Penzoil is junk in my opinion. I have also had 3 engine mechanics tell me they see more sludge from Penzoil than anything else. BUT, that can be affected by the user as well.

A test was conducted a couple of years ago, third party, regarding film strength of various oil brands, with some interesting observations. The discussion goes into great detail why even the film strength would be important, and how it is but one aspect of what an oil has to do. Might make for a good read for some folks here. Might even cause some folks to rethink what they are using. You be the judge.

Wes, see which one came in first! For the sake of full disclosure, I use none of the oil brands that got tested (sigh). Really wish they had thrown the one I use in there so I could see the results.

So many factors that can effect a vehicles oil. Pretty much for the most part, most out there change their oil at or around 5k miles. Most off the shelf oil will serve well.

Schaeffer is a good oil, just wish it was easy to purchase at a local auto parts store. One would think for as long as it has been around it would be easy accessible.

For the most part the one that puts out the most money on marketing sells the most product. Just a simple fact of life. Hence why Mobil 1 is so popular. They advertise like crazy. Nothing wrong with Mobil 1.

I have noticed that Royal Purple has stepped up their marketing. I have seen their name in some of the latest movies that are out, one being the latest Die Hard movie and World War Z, a display of Royal Purple motor oil in the middle of a grocery store.

Dang! Well I'll put my foot where my mouth is. Honestly its all lube. And we all pay too much for it anyhow. I'll keep my supersticious thoughts about Penzoil and run my red white and blue AMSOIL and Valvoline!! lol

Yeah, I really have no bias either way. I use Schaeffer oil based on reputation and quality, but also because I can get it at wholesale price and delivered free. One of the perks of a commercial account and buying a lot of product. If I was buying like most folks, for a personal vehicle or two, not really sure which brand I would buy. More than likely Amsoil, because I already use a couple of their products for niche applications.
