The Age old debate... Which oil is best?

Recommended Posts

So it's time for an oil change on my 2002 Silverado 4.3 V6 extended cab, and I've been researching and debating switching oils. Previous owners used Mobil1 and swear by it, I used Pennzoil sysnthetic ( either by myself or the jiffy place ).... Recently I've heard about Pennzoil Ultra Platinum or Ulta * whatever it is you get what I am saying...

So I am wondering should I switch? Have you guys heard anything good about certian oil or synthetics?

Just put the Penzoil platinum latest greatest made from natural gas in the truck a couple weeks ago & had Mobil 1 synthetic previously. Not thinking you are going to see a difference between those two.

There is a forum Bob is the oil guy & you can read the back & forth stuff. Next go around for me will be which ever of the above two is on sale when needed.

Yeah that's what I am feeling. ... I just find it strange as soon as I switched from Mobil1 ( which was what the previous owner used ) I got some oil leaks from the oil pan etc.. but I am not really sure if it'd be the oil just a truck at 140,000k..

I've heard some people SWEAR by Mobil1 and some say no difference.

Marketing hype.

Pennzoil’s “motor oil reimagined” marketing campaign is based on gas-to-liquid (GTL) base oil technology. Consumers should be aware that GTL technology is simply a process that converts natural gas, obtained by Pennzoil from Qatar, into Group III base oil. Because motor oils are formulated with GTL does not mean they outperform other synthetic formulated oils. There is no magic base oil that elevates one motor oil over all others. It’s the precise combination of quality base oils and additives that defines motor oil performance.

Think they are all marketing hype, just ask the opposing company.

May look into Schaeffers as well next go around. Had always known them for oil for diesels & gear boxes. Did not realize or even think about them for gas motors.

Is Mobil1 a synthetic?

I may be right or wrong depending on the given situation but have found that a motor with high miles that has been running with conventional oil its life and switched to synthetics will seep oil like never before.

The good oil/bad oil argument is also fun to be involved with... For conventional oil, there is no bad oil if you change every 3000 miles. For synthetic oil, there is no bad one if you change out every 5000 miles. This is for the average truck that hardly goes off the road or spends less than 10% of its live tugging a trailer around.

I have always been a fan of Valvolene but I am sure its not the best expensive brand out there for the extreme conditions... Good luck!

The 3,000-mile oil change is the credo of the quick-oil change industry and dealership service departments, designed to regularly get you into the service bay.

Head over to bobistheoilguy.com. There is enough information there to read until your eyes bleed.

I just started getting into the specifications of different oils and went there and learned quite a bit in just reading around. Posted a little as well.

Most over there seem to like Pennzoil the best with Castrol and close second.

Thru lots of testing and being an equipment dealer with a highly regarded reputation the answer to most anticipated is.......yes, to all of the above. Just keep it full and changed.

Any good oil that meets specifications, regular oil changes, and a good, high quality oil filter (don't skimp here) will keep your engine happy for a long time.

  • 2 weeks later...

Mobil 1, Amsoil, Pennzoil, Quaker State, etc, etc are all good choices. The comment that GTL is just making a Group III oil out of natural gas, well, that is true, but Group IV, the so-called 'true synthetic" by the purists out there, is also made from natural gas. Well, ethylene gas that is derived from natural gas. It is not concocted from air by some nose picking dweeb in a lab coat.

I use Schaeffer, but if that wasn't available to me, I would opt for Pennzoil Ultra. In a test regarding film strength done by a third party source, it wiped the floor with Mobil 1, Amsoil, and the rest. But the was just the film strength test, so don't get the idea that I am stating it is better than all the others. There is a lot more to what makes a good oil than just the film strength.

I use Schaeffer primarily because I also use it for my commercial stuff, so it is easy to get a case of 5w30 synthetic for the pickup thrown in with a bulk order. I get a wholesale price and free shipping to the front door. Kinda hard to beat that deal. And those folks have been brewing up lubricating oils longer than anyone else in N. America... since 1839, so I think they might have a handle on how to make a good motor oil.
