Foglights On With High Beams

Recommended Posts

Got a 2014 silverado & am about to install some Rigid SR-Q2 LED's into the fog light assembly, this guide plus a set of fabbed connectors will help a bunch to make the install right, thx Spurshot!

Check the wattage of the lights you plan to install. If they are much higher than the OEM bulb rating, you should consider adding a relay circuit.

SR-Q2 wide are pretty low, I am not 100% sure what watts the OEM bulb are though... but i thought they were 35w

SR-Q2 Specifications:

  • Watts: 34.5
  • Amp Draw: 2.50
  • LED's: 6
  • Raw Lumens: 3030
  • Lux @ 10m: 178.2
  • Beam Distance: 267.0 m
  • Peak Beam Intensity: 17,824 cd

** Edit - Finished the install, seems to work great. I still need to do your foglight highbeam mod but wifey thinks i spent enough time in the shop for one day :)

ok.. I got it working on my 2016 GMC. Just so there is confusion.. everything is the same as the 2014-2-015. Just the one wire is a sold brown now on the 2016 as mentioned above. But the position ( where to insert the diode) is the exact same as seen on page 1 of this thread.

Like GMC-AT, I did this mod on my 2016 Sierra Denali. Went with the 10-18 mod at first. Had fogs with high beams just like spurshot noted on Page 1. But, on the 2016 trucks with Intellibeam, when you turn on fogs, it disables the automatic high beam feature. Damn, this is a really nice option. So with 10-18, you have fogs with high beams and not low beams, IF you want to keep the Intellibeam active. If you don't care about auto high beams, just push the fog light button and you have them on low beam, same as normal.

After some thought and research, I switched the diode to the 10-22 location in the brown connector. 22 is the Park Lamp Relay control. In this position, you have fogs with park lamps, low beams and high beams and Intellibeam functions normally. The only thing you are giving up now is that you have fogs on with every light position. You cannot have just your parking lights on. I guess this is OK, because I can't remember the last time I used just the parking lights.

Thanks to spurshot and GMC-AT for you input. Now the awesome headlights on the 2016 Sierra produce even more light on the road with the addition of the fogs lamps and Intellibeam functions normally. This is a great mod and highly recommended.

Now you need to replace the fog light assemblies with some better lights. I'm not a fan of the LED replacement bulbs I've seen. The ones I've seen change the beam to where it glares above the original cutoff. TRS makes a direct replacement assembly for the Sierra now. I have the Rigid DOT/SAE lights.

Add a switch to the mod and that will allow you to "kill" the mod when needed.

On a 14/15 truck, I would 100% agree. The OE fog lights are a joke. On the 2016 GMC the OE fog lights are LED and seem to be a pretty good light. They project a narrow beam of light with a sharp flat cutoff line. Not saying they can't be improved on, but they are pretty darn good lights.

Good to hear they've moved forward away from those old lights designed almost a decade ago.

If you're interested in other options for them, the TRS snap in replacement fogs are rated at 2400 lumens and have a wide beam to cover the ditches.

Got to agree with GMC-AT. I don't foresee any headlight/fog light updates on my truck. Lights are impressive!

I sure wish General Motors had considered this update when they released the 2014 trucks. My 2015 Sierra's lights are crap! And I've had the technical service bulletin and performed. They are certainly better, but much less than satisfactory to me.

Any idea if the 2016 lights will fit in the headlight and fog light areas on the 2015's?
