Foglights On With High Beams

Recommended Posts

Two Epistar 36W (what they call strips- I'd call 'em boxes). They come with a remote control and I ordered a wiring kit. Want to wire into the high beams (projector lamps) if possible. If not, I suppose I'd just hot wire and control with the remote.

Ah, well I know Spurshot took a volt meter and poked around by the headlights until he was able to find the wire that activated the high beams.

I don't know which wire it is though. But with all the light I have infront now I very rarely use my high beams. No need for them now with a 20", 30", and rigid driving lights. They all outdo the high beams all day.

Mine are on switches. Rigid pods are hooked to dogs and the two light bars are hooked together on an external switc

If you don't use your fog lights much or could do without them then you could wire into the fogs and do the fog lights on with high beams mod

I find the whole "fogs w/high beams" thing problematic. Using high beams in fog just blinds the driver with reflected light from the fog. What I want to do is increase the reach and width of the high beams. (Lots of critters cross roads in MN! I prefer to see them in the ditches or way ahead of me.)

While I'm handy, these trucks are way above my pay grade, and I want someone to install who won't mess up the computers or electrical circuits. Dealership is now taking the position that I have to spend $500+ on parts with them or no go.

The fog lights can be operated outside of the high beams with this mod. This mod is to add that width in the light when the high beams are on.

When done as Spurshot has done the write up, the fog lights can still be activated by the OEM fog light switch without activated the high beams. However whenever the high beams are activated by either flashing or constant on by moving the high beam lever, then the fogs will automatically come on. So in a fog situation you can still activate just the fog lights and not have the light reflect from high beams.

If you think about it, if you have your highs on close enough to where you're blinding someone else then it's because of the high beams, not fogs. On lows the fogs mainly help light up the area closer to the truck. I also figure that if it's a situation where I need or want the highs on then fogs on with highs is an added plus. As said, you're still able to turn the fogs on and off with the lows like normal. The only thing the mod does is add fogs with the highs.

I also did the mod where the cargo lights on the 3rd brake light come on with reverse just to get a little extra light while backing up without installing anything aftermarket and it works good enough. I haven't had any problems with the electrical system. The diodes just act as a one way valve so it's safe from how I look at it. I've also read that people just use a wire for the cargo light mod so their reverse lights also come on when you turn on the cargo lights which I may change out the diode with a wire one day.

I appreciate the comments, guys, but I still need to find someone dependable to do my installation. Anyone know of a nationwide company that might have an outlet in MN that would do this type of work?

I had my truck in for scheduled service yesterday. And for some reason that tech that was working on my truck spotted of the high beams on and the fog lights on which then led them to check the body control module. I was officially put on notice that tampering with the body control module is a big no no. Like void your warranty no no

Doing the diode mod isn't tampering with the BCM. It's just affecting how the electricity flows downstream from the BCM.

2014 SIERRA SLT FOG LIGHTS WITH HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHTS MODIFICATION

  • This mod will let you use the fog lights on low beam same as factory. On and off with the fog light button.
  •

  • When the fog lights are turned on while on low beam, then the high beams are either flashed or turned on and then off, the fog lights remain on when going back to low beam.
  •

  • When the high beams headlights are switched on, the fog lights come on also. You cannot shut the fog lights off with the high beams on. When going back to low beam, the fog lights go off if they were off prior to switching high beams on.
  •

  1. Find the BCM under the dash, just to the left side of the steering column, right behind and above the OBD2 connector. It's a black box about 7" square and an inch thick. It will have 7 connectors in the lower edge of various colors.
  2.

  3. Pull the BROWN connector loose. There is a little tab you need to squeeze inward to release it.
  4.

  5. Look at it closely, there are tiny numbers at the corners to give you pin location reference. Use my attached connector photo and the numbers on the connector, along with the colors of the wires to locate the proper wires.
  6.

  7. Locate pin #10 with the Brown and White striped wire. This is the Fog light signal wire for the relay.
  8.

  9. Locate pin #18 with the Brown and Violet striped wire. This is the High Beam signal wire for its relay.
  10.

  11. Take a 1N4004 diode and push the wire lead of the diode in along side the wires with a pair of needle nose pliers. You need to push hard to get it to slide in about 1/4" so it will stay snug. Make sure the marked end of the diode (stripe) is toward the High Beam.
  12.

  13. You can put a piece of electrical tape over the bare diode leads or you can slip a piece of heat shrink over the diode before you install it and shrink it after pushing it in. But there's really no need as these are switched Ground leads, not power.
  14.

  15. Put the BROWN connector back in the BCM.
  16.

  17. YOU'RE DONE. THAT'S IT.
  18.

very helpful info i was going to make up a couple small harnesses for this mod, i have done it in my truck and it worked great so i was going to do it for some friends so i need to know what make/size pin 10 and 18 are. Apparently gm doesn't tell the dealers this info so they can't give me the part number or anything. Was wondering if anyone on here knows what i need to know

They scolded me like I was a kid lol.

Lol wow. I could understand if it was obvious that you have been actually tampering with the BCM itself and messing with its programming but messing with some wires downstream of it, that's just like changing your headlights out. GM shouldn't care

Those service department people would have gotten a scolding from me. I'm the customer at the dealership and the vehicle belongs to me, not them. Politeness and respect to customers is a requirement, not something they get to chose to do. They work for a management and ultimately the owner. If they have concerns or advice, they should be polite about offering it.

As for the voiding of the warranty, we all know they can't arbitrarily void a warranty and make it stick without evidence that the modification caused the problem for which you are making a warranty claim on. For example, they can't deny warranty claims on the electrical system because you put bigger tires and aftermarket wheels with different offset on. But they might be able to deny a claim on the wheel bearings or ball joints.

That's great. My particular goal was to use the fog circuit to tie in my LED wide beam driving lights and be able to use them with high or low beam. I cannot have them on anytime the low beam is on since they are too bright for oncoming traffic. I got that done and ended up with the fog circuit being lit anytime the high beams are on and the fog circuit shuts off when dimming the high beams. Very slick when an oncoming car pops over a rise in road and you need to dim all the lights.

Would this same concept work for a 20" light bar? If so, how exactly did you splice the switch into your fog light wiring?
