Think I have a bad wheel bearing. Moog or Timken?

Recommended Posts

First off, apologizing for the long post. Not even sure if this needs to go in this forum (couldn't decide which one to put this in).

Who makes the better front wheel bearing/hub replacement? Moog or Timken? I always thought Moog made the better suspension/steering parts and Timken had the better bearing components.

I think one of my front wheel bearings is out or going out. What do you think? Here are my symptoms.

1. Getting a squeaking/metal on metal sound
2. Does not happen until I’ve been driving for about 10 minutes. If I stop somewhere (grocery store, etc) it won't do it for about 5-10 minutes after I start driving again.
3. Was not happening every time I drove but getting more consistent (and a little louder)
4. Usually starts around 15 mph and can hear it up to about 35/40 (noise loudest at 25-30 mph). Anything after that the road/wind noise seems to mask the sound
5. Noise post pronounced when driving straight. When making a sharp left turn the noise goes away. I did a zig-zag pattern in my neighborhood at about 25 mph and the noise went away whenever I made the left turn and came back when going straight. Making either a right-hand turn or right turn doing the zig-zag pattern, the noise is still there.
6. There is no play with either front wheel but I have read that a bearing could still be bad even if they are tight.
7. Definitely sounds like it is coming from the left side of the truck. If roll down only the right window I can't hear it, but can hear it very clearly with the left window only down.

I was reading that you can test which one it is by turning while driving. If the noise goes away when turning left, it’s your right bearing. If it goes away when turning right, it’s your left and that it is taking the pressure off the bearing. Is that true? I would think if you turn left and it goes away, you take the weight off the bearing since the truck leans more to the right and puts more pressure on the right bearing.

Sorry for the long post but wanted to get as much information out there as possible. What are your thoughts? Bad bearing?

oems are Timken

I was going to ask if anybody knows who the OE supplier is for the AC Delco hub assemblies. Rockauto has the Timkens for $113 and the AC Delcos are $209. Looks like I'm going with the Timkens especially if they supply AC Delco with the hubs. Why would I pay $90 more for the same bearing/hub assembly?

I picked up some Valvoline Durablend grease for when I get to do my hub replacement but then realized I have a can of the GM grease (Part# 12345879). Should I use the GM grease or the Valvoline?

Is the GM grease a good grease or would Valvoline be an upgrade? The manual says to use the grease on Front Axle Propshaft spline.
