Oil - 5-30W

Recommended Posts

I have a half dozen 6 packs of Mobil 1 5-30W. It's Dexos 1 approved. But it's not in the owners manual as "recommended". I believe 0-20 is the "recommended" weight. I'm thinking of running it.

Anyone have any input?

Id sell it, and get what you need. Might get away with it in sunny SoCal, but why chance it? You get 4 free oil changes you already paid GM for.

These V8 motors are designed to run 0W20.

I wouldn't do it, but it's your truck and 40+K

Very interesting, my 4.3 calls for 5w30. Just out of curiosity, why would the oil weight be different from a V6 and V8?

Just the way they designed the tolerances.

If you live in a warm climate, don't take many short trips and do a lot of towing, I wouldn't hesitate to run it. The Vettes run 5W30 for normal use but the manual recommends 15W50 for racing. Towing something heavy up hills, especially in hot weather, is a somewhat similar task and using a thicker oil should offer more protection.

I would not use a non-recommended oil in a modern engine. The AFM, VVT and piston coolers all rely on oil flow to operate. Seems like a needless risk just to save a few bucks.

Says GM. Your dealer should have told you that when you purchased the truck. 4 oil changes within 2 years can be performed by your dealership for free.

I guess your question was already answered?

First bullet point on the window sticker reads as follows: "SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE, 2YR/24,000 MILES, OIL & FILTER, 4 WHEEL TIRE ROTATION, SEE WWW.GMC.COM OR DEALER FOR DETAILS"

It is also on every GMC Sierra commercial on TV.

Originally it was set up for the schedule set up in the OM, which is at 7,500 mile intervals, or whenever your OLM was below a certain percentage (10% or 15%), can't remember. I guess it is 4 oil changes in a 2 year period now, or so I have read here??? This was reported to have come from GM, and some dealers may or may not be on board with this?

I bought my truck back in September, before this information was reported on this site. I wasn't going to go the full 7,500 miles it would have taken to get my OLM down to zero, so I decided I would change mine at 3.750 miles, which was 50% on the OLM. I paid for my first oil change, then at 7,500 miles, GM paid for the oil change, tire rotation, and 27 point check.

I think I will get my oil changed at this 3,750 mile interval at least until I get to 15,000 miles, then I may extend it out a bit from there. Maybe every 5,000 miles? I am from the old school, and have always changed my oil in all my vehicles at 3,000 miles, and yes it bothered me to go that extra 750 miles on my first oil change. They used to put in a break in oil years ago in new motors that was changed out after just a few hundred miles, so it makes some of us old timers twitch to go very far on the first oil change. LOL

I keep my vehicles for several years, and usually get between 250,000 and 300,000 miles out of them, if I like them enough to keep that long. I always have a truck, my Camaro for special days in the summer, and a commuter car that I really rack up the miles on (currently 228,000 miles). My commuter will go 300,000 easily, 3800 Series II V6, that has had regular oil changes.

I know some of the young guys think they can go the full 7,500 miles or so between oil changes, but I would bet most from that school haven't even put 100,000 miles on a car/truck, let alone 300,000? IMO, those oil changes are crucial, if you want to get those high miles out of your vehicles. If you trade off before getting 100,000 miles, or every 4 years or so, I guess the next guy will have to worry about it.

I know, TMI and not directed at you. I added that for the youngsters that know more than me about oil changes, and driving cars for a long time!
