Hastings LF613, Very good PR from Manufacturer

Recommended Posts

My Question:

I was looking at your LF613 filter as a replacement for my PF48 filter on my 4.8 Silverado. I had a couple of questions:

I just want to confirm that the location of the bypass valve on the LF613 is at the filter inlet, not at the top of the element as on the ACDelco PF48. The Delco's arrangement seems inferior to me.

Secondly, and more importantly, the bypass valve on the Delco operates at approximately 9-12 psi, or something in that neighborhood (from what I understand). The specs for the LF613 indicate that the bypass becomes operational at 20psi. Is this large desparity a problem? Will my engine be starved of oil at high rpms because the bypass on the LF613 requires a higher pressure to operate?

Answer Given:

Thank you for using Hastings filters. The by-pass valve in the LF613 is at the top of the element. This valve is set to open when the differential pressure across the element reaches 20 psid. Engineering evaluated the AC Delco filter in 2006 and determined that the by-pass valve in that filter opened at 18.84 psid. Therefore, the by-pass valve in the LF613 opens at nearly the same level of restriction as the AC Delco filter.

Is there a reason you want Hastings? Hastings is made by Baldwin, they are both exactly the same. We use Baldwin oil filters at our shop because of their connection with heavy diesels and farm equipment.

Hastings and Baldwin are good filters don't get me wrong but there are better choices out there. Fram tough guard or ultra, Purolater Pure One or Synthetic, Mobil 1, Wix.

If you're set on hastings then yes the LF613 is fine for your vehicle, we use the baldwin equivalent often for the GM vehicles that come in our shop.

Bobistheoilguy are putting way to much thought into this.

So, I thought I would get a Wix with a baseplate mount bypass valve. Turns out it is on the top of the cartridge also (similar to the ACDelco). So, it appears that all iterations of the filters for our modern LS engines have the top mounted bypass valve. This would mean to me that this is a tolerable arrangement. Upon cutting open a Wix 57060 and an ACDelco PF48 it appears that the ACDelco is actually a better filter. It had a firmer (i.e. higher psi) bypass valve and slightly more filter area. I am going to continue to use it with confidence. This of course applies to the non E-core version. Pictures Below.
