GM: Buckle Up Or Don’t Go Anywhere

It doesn't take much imagination to see why having the car not move without the seat belts on could cause serious problems. Wearing a seat belt is common sense, but I want the vehicle to move when I put it in gear, period.

Not to mention, what would keep someone from buckling in and getting the car moving, then taking the belt off? Is the car going to shut off if that happens? You wouldn't think they'd want that to happen more, hehe.

My assumption would be that it would just disable the cruise control if you unbuckled. But that probably wouldn't bug many people just driving around in town.

Black box info has been used in court before. As for OnStar and their vehicle override, it takes a request from law enforcement to do so.

...

Yes I know vehicle data recorder information has been used in court. These circumstances required court orders for discovery. But what about without a court order or without a search warrant? Where's the line? It's new ground and yet to be tested by LEO or challenged by John Q. Public.

I've also read that law enforcement can request Onstar shutdown a vehicle. It may seem reasonable to everyone that a Joe-bag-o-donuts cop could have vehicle shut down, when we're talking about a high speed chase of a felon. But it gets murky when things like a speeder gets shut down as he passes the cop. He could be on his way to the hospital to save a persons life. How about a car weaving erratically thru traffic? Ran a red light? Burned out tail light? At what point is it infringement on our civil liberties when a lone cop can shut down your vehicle, without a court order? This stuff hasn't been established from what I've read.

I always wear one, unless I'm driving low speed in a field or something. I don't think I should have to put it on to put it in gear though. What If I want to just move it in the driveway... If you drive on the road without a seat belt your ignorant.

It's a massive pain in the ass at my shop since they made the fork lifts not go unless your seat belt is buckled. When I'm running a job where im on and off all night its a huge pain.
