GM: Buckle Up Or Don’t Go Anywhere

Daryl,

One that really has me interested is the data recording in these vehicles. Virtually all major vehicle manufacturers have been recording data in their vehicles for many years now. That data has started to be used in court cases. How long will it be before law enforcement tries to use it as evidence? Who owns the data? Is it admissible? Under what circumstances? Can it be used for a traffic violation? etc.

Another one is using OnStar or other linked systems to disable a vehicle. Who can do it? When? Who gets to make the decision?

I completely agree and it kinda sounds like a conspiracy theory but it's true I know for a fact insurance companies have gotten techs to access the data in the computers to assess an accident and decide liability.

That Progressive Insurance company TV ad that runs showing a little box to plug into your vehicle is a memory recording device to capture your car's data for an evaluation of your driving habits.

Black box info has been used in court before. As for OnStar and their vehicle override, it takes a request from law enforcement to do so.

As for breathalyzer interlocks, some states use them already on repeat DUI offenders.

While we are at it why not breathalizers to start the vehicle?

They have those too we had one in the shop that had it on it the guy had been busted several times and he had to pay to install it. He bought a spare tip when he brought it to us and one guy was assigned to drive it the whole time it was in there.

Never had that. Did have one car with hand controls as the owner was disabled at the shop I was in. The pedals were still there but you'd have to have dainty feet to use them due to the linkage for the hand controls. That was tough. They're rare but Ohio even has special license plates for repeat offenders. Google "Ohio party plate".

typically they do not allow persons not trained to retrieve data for court record to retrieve it. From what I understand if the data is retrieved it must be done so in the presence of an officer or done by a third party.

It was through the proper channels at the dealership not just all willy nilly don't remember a cop but could have been there, didn't mean for it to sound like they do it on a whim.

Corporate spin doctors trying to generate some positive press to counteract all the recent bad press regarding safety problems. When desperate and you have no new ideas, recycle an old one that failed before.....
