Techron fuel system treatment dosage? can you overdose?

Recommended Posts

Since the Techron only comes in 12-oz or 20-oz bottles and each treats up to either 12 or 20 gallons, that is not enough for a full tank in our trucks. When I fill up I generally pump about 21 gallons plus what is left in the tank equals probably around 24-26 gallons.

So, since the 20-oz bottle only treats UP TO 20 gallons, can I add a 20 and 12-oz bottle to my full tank and be ok? It would just give it a stronger dose and in theory better cleaning. Would two 20-oz bottles be too much?

I also thought about a bottle of MMO through to tank for a cleaning since I've heard good things about that as well.

Two wouldn't be too much. Many have double-dosed their tanks to help with the problem of the fuel level sensor getting a build-up on it from the ethanol fuels. If you're really worried, just use a 12oz for the second bottle. Haven't you asked this question in the past?

The concentrate in the 12 oz does 15 gallons, iirc. You could use two of those if you're concerned

The concentrate is the best to use, because it is a full system cleaner.

I just always filled the truck up when i was down to 1/4 of a tank. One bottle there, then the next tank when it got down to 1/4 a tank, another bottle, and I was good for a year. Of course if you get Chevron gas all the time, you really don't need to add the bottles as techron is included in their fuels. Sadly they don't have Chevrons out here.

I use techron quite a bit and have done alot of research on it. Proper dosing is 1oz per gallon of fuel so for most of us, that means you add 26 oz of techron and then fill the tank. Severly dirty fuel systems may require more than 1 treatment. Over dosing shouldn't really hurt anything but won't do much good either. You need the time of several tank fulls of techron treatment to remove fuel system deposits, if you have them.

Techron is one of the best fuel system cleaners out there but it is not a miracle product.

I was under the assumption that since Ethanol was a solvent, that cleaners were no longer needed. Where can a person get more info on this?

Ethanol, especially the E85, does indeed keep the fuel system and injectors, including upper cylinders a lot cleaner. Follow GM's advice on the use of additives when using higher ethanol blends..... don't. If you have a mind to do so, then fill a couple of tanks with regular and run the techron, then go back to E85. For E10 ethanol blends common now, go ahead and use the Techron. There is not enough ethanol there to fully keep systems clean.

I vary between regular and E85 throughout the year, based on the pricing spreads. When I run regular (really it is E10), I will run a bottle of Techron thru occasionally. When I run E85, I use no additive.
