2014 Sierra 5.3 vs. Ecoboost

Recommended Posts

I had a 2012 FX4 ecoboost and a 2014 same thing, both with 3.73s. I now have a 2015 5.3 All Terrian.

The ecoboost makes the 5.3 look slow lol. Even without a tune the ecoboost is a fast truck for what it is. With a tuner it makes the 5.3 look real bad.

Just my 2 cents.

The only time a V6 sounds good to me is when you cant hear it, I had grand national Buick one weekend, couldn't handle the sound. Just have to have that V8 sound.

I guess I need an exhaust cause my 5.3 is way too quiet! I wanna hear this thing!

Yeah them Fords are getting a lot of power from a little V6. Three of my buds bought them and my neighbor did too. I got a Silverado because I think trying to get that kind of power from that little Ford motor just might overstress it a bit. I got a 5.3 that will run on E 85. It's no slouch but never raced a Ford. I didn't buy it to race. Anyway Surprise ,Surprise! The neighbor is getting a new Eco Boost engine on warranty because his started knocking badly. It's been two weeks and he is still driving a little loaner car, I'm driving my shiny black LTZ and it's still had zero problems. Farmers Only Reason for Drinking!

I've never driven a ford with an ecoboost but I do drive one with a 5.0 for work everyday. It is kind of a slouch compared to the DI 5.3, doesn't have the get up and go. On the other hand when you get the revs up on it that 5.0 will scoot.

I've seen enough problems with fuel dilution and bad timing chains to know I'm not interested in the ecoboost. The 3.5 still hasn't demonstrated it can hold up in the long run. The 2.7 is too new. The SBC is time tested. The oil pump problems are a thing of the past and the bottom end is solid. Not thrilled with the AFM lifters but the LS design makes it an easy system to remove.

I'm here because my 2012 FX4 almost killed my family 3 times.... Dang intercooler issues and major fuel dilution (Blackstone labs verified).

My ecoboost was FAST when i got it, after the new intercooler and flash it was honestly no faster than my new 5.3 with 3.42s. I loved the interior (still moreso than the Chev) and everything else about the truck, other than the fact that i clicked 3.5EB over the 6.2 when i ordered it. If i had gotten the 5.0 or 6.2 i'd still own it.

I don't see these trucks being around for a long time, the truck was always under boost and with the fuel diluted oil rings and bearings will be shot soon enough, imo.

This was a few months ago, now its right around 190k miles. Still pulls strong and tows daily. Never had any intercooler issues. We did replace all the coils around 100k because it started miss-firing and has always been ran on 87. Never had an issue with oil buildup in the intake and doesn't run a catch can. Just now we've began running 93 full time. Its been through 2 sets of Nitto Terras, both lasting around 60k miles. And my dad liked it so much he went out and bought a used 2013 King Ranch with 40k miles.

They're great engines. Can't say we've had the same problems most have reported. They pull strong and have diesel like power curves. They don't get the advertised gas milage but the power output more than makes up for it. The 190k mile one is quicker than my 5.3 even with the tune and bolt-ons.

I never had any issues with either of mine but I only had 30k on the 2012 and 15 on the 2014. The ecoboost pulls a lot harder then the 5.3. Most noticeable is at highway speeds when trying to pass someone, or say going up a hill. You hammer the EB and it gets up and goes no questions asked. The 5.3 in the same situation, not so much. She tries real hard, but she just doesnt have it! Turbos for the win! (Im not one of those 'ford' or 'chevy' only guys. I like them all. If I was rich Id have them all)

The timing chain problem is quite common and well known. Headover to the F150Ecoboost forum or search for ecoboost timing chain on youtube. A coworker of mine got burned on a used 2012 F150 with 80k on it. Developed a rattle on startup.

After that, search for ecoboost fuel dilution. FoMoCo tuned the ecoboost to run pig rich to protect against lean conditions. All that unburnt fuel ends up in the oil. Many guys that get a used oil analysis have had to start changing their oil at 5k because there was so much gas in it. Glad to hear yours is running well but my experience has shown me otherwise.

Remember this is the Internet and a good majority of owners come to forums to bitch about their vehicles. If you search afm failure and used even this site as a guide no one would buy a 4th Gen LS either... or an LT series engine either as its the identical system.

The eco didn't interest me either and I never bothered with one as both my F150s were 6.2 trucks ( XLT supercab and FX4 crew) but it doesn't mean you will buy an eco and it will pile up on you.

Timing chains was pretty well isolated to mostly 11s and some 12s but like with anything there have been newer ones fail too. I work with a couple guys with higher mile ones and no problems... it's like anything else, luck of the draw.

  • 2 weeks later...

I really miss my 2013 eco boost for towing, it towed way better then my 15 Chevy , towing my car trailer empty it feels like I'm towing 5,000lbs , but the chev has way better fuel mileage
