Daryl Z71's 2006 Silverado Z71 Re-build

Well today I removed my rear bumper, hitch, and bed so I can start to refinish my frame, and install my new leaf springs, shocks, and hitch. After removing the bed it looks like I'll also be installing a new fuel pump, and brake lines.

Haha, it's definitely going to get a lot of love. The rust actually isn't as bad as it looks. Probably 95% of it is just surface rust, there's really hardly any rust coming off in big chunks. Last night I pressure washed it just as it was getting dark, and today I changed the rear end fluid, cleaned up the housing cover, and shot some primer on it.

Keep it coming! That's definitely some progress and I'm very happy for your truck

How difficult was the diff fluid change?

Rear diff fluid changes are very easy.. Buy a new gasket as it will most likely be toast after taking the cover off, then take the cover off and all the oil will drain out, then put the gasket and cover back on and fill it up.

That truck is definatley a PA truck! Is there any body rust?

Not hard at all. Whoever changed it before used Silicon to seal it back up so the worst part was getting all that off of the housing and cover.

There is some body rust inside the bed where the tail lights are, and as of now there is rust on the rocker panels. It hasn't rusted through yet so I want to try and fix that after I get this project taken care of.

I think newer vehicle have the silicone gasket in the diff... One of my 2010 ford E-350's had a leaky rear diff and the dealer said all trucks and vans have that silicone gasket from the factory.. I was unaware

The 2011 6.2 that I used to have had a paper gasket when I changed the fluid in it, but that might have changed with the new trucks. I don't know how this one wasn't leaking since it didn't have hardly any silicon on it.

Seems easy enough...

But as with the tranny fluid I'm scared to change it out since it might be the original. I changed my trans fluid back in 2011 and 2 months later it failed! Maybe it was just a coincidence?

I did the same thing.. I've had 3 4l60s... The first was I did a trans flush at 110k and the trans grenaded at 115k... Was babied it's whole life too. I put 150k on the other 2 4l60's and didn't do anything to them and they were fine... I don't know what's right and wrong with the trans fluid but that's just my experience with it... I would just leave it alone.
