Frame Wax/Undercoating

Recommended Posts

I just dropped off my GMC 2500 HD at the Chevrolet dealer for same issues. Shocks rusting...bolts rusting and the frame as well. They said they sprayed the bolts with

WD40 {I could have done that} and said that I can use Fluid Film If I want so will head to Lowes for a case. The frame they said will be done by a certain procedure

per factory and said they will paint the frame. Don't know if they replaced the shocks.... but will post if so. Truck bought in December and has 1600 miles so far and

is not a DD. Has been driven in snow and was put through a touch less car wash {It does fit} 7' is close on a 2500 HD and was under carriage washed 4 times so far.

Mostly done by hand as I'm a detailer for 40 years but hate the cold and has to be done outside. Will pick up tomorrow and will post results on frame.

Well,

Picked up the truck last night and they did not replace the shocks...they just sprayed them with WD40 and the bolts they did the same. The frame however they scraped all the loose wax and wire wheel the surface rust off and treated the spots and re-applied the factory coating throughout the entire frame. Looks really good {for now}.

What can I do with the bolts if I get new ones and want to either plate...powder coat to keep frtom rusting?

This stuff should be showing up on my doorstep today: https://www.daubertchemical.com/store/product-list/corrosion-prevention/nox-rust-x-121b

I'm hoping I can spray it right over the rust and don't have to do too much surface prep. Like Rustoleum or somet

GM part no. 12346501 or AC Delco 10-7014 is the nox-rust x121b called in the GM spec. This is a spray can for touch up that goes on and leaves a black/wax film behind. Any GM dealer can get it,they may not stock it. The list price 13.84 a can they may want shipping mine did not. NO way will my truck go to a body shop

Did you get a chance to try it out yet? I'm about to order this too so I am ready to tackle any start of rust.

No it's been raining here and I've been busy. Maybe next weekend I can find some time. I was going to look into getting some ramps to make the work easier too. Whenever I do it I will take some pictures and post them.

So far I'm good, only trouble spot is in one of those round tube cross member over the rear end, but I think I did that with a pressure washer blowing the crap outta there, haven't figured out what to do about it yet

How far did they tear everything down for those who had it addressed correctly?

Tear everything down? Addressed correctly? They give the lot boy a wire brush and a putty knife and have him go to town. Then he sloshes goop all over the under side of the truck, inside the wheels, cables, wires, brakes, and maybe, you'll get some on your nice paint job. I've seen it "addressed correctly" first hand. No thanks.

My dealership doesn't have a bodyshop so they have another place do their body work. The shop they use has a great reputation, I've seen some of the work they've done. In don't think they would make a mess and expect me to accept it

Then you should ask them how far they are going to tear everything down and correctly address it. It's worth a phone call.

I did do that when I took the truck there, he said he would pull the bed and cab to do it right. He said that he gets the feeling they want him to put it on the lift and just spray bad spots. He can only do what they tell him. That's why I'm asking for people who have been through this already on their experiences.

If you get him to pull the bed and cab, you should be playing the lottery every night. Cause you be a lucky son of a gun.

Here's what mine looks like.

LOOKS LIKE JUNK.

I bought this truck beginning of October 2013. So about 19 months old now.
2014 GMC Sierra All Terrain.

As somebody who works FOR a company that does the marketing for GM, I am starting to get VERY sceptical when GMC is launching slogans like "Precision Truck Event" and "GMC, Precision Matters", etc.

Look at my shocks for example! Seriously?!
