Frame Wax/Undercoating

Recommended Posts

I have the same issue the wax will come off with your nail and the frame will rust away as its bare metal under that crappy wax they have on frame there really is no fix other than you scrapping most of that wax off and priming and painting the frame which in order to do properly you would have to remove the bed and cab of truck.i spoke to gm the first time regarding this issue and was told there is none.talked to them today about other issues and was told yeah we are aware of some of the wax falling off in places.go look at a deal ship at the trucks and you will see that the frames are rusty in places even before they are sold.my solution to this and the host of other issues I'm having with my rusty death wish machine is to get rid of this truck and never buy gm again.pretty sad when you pay over 50000 for a new truck and the frame is gonna rust away because gm is too cheap to put paint on the frames of their trucks

I feel your pain and this is exactly what I did. I don't think I am the only one.

Between a dealer service advisor telling me nothing is wrong and an area rep who could care less, GM lost a 25 year customer. I don't think the frame would rust away, although some pictures I have seen make me wonder a little bit. A few of them we attrocious! It was just the fact they touted great corrosion protection and that protection is falling off. Couple it with the other issues I had and that was enough. My wife's 2010 avalanche @ 100,000 miles looked better than my 2014 @ 8000 miles. Really enjoying what I am driving now though.

I was keeping a detailed log of what was happening after the second trip to the dealer after I got the feeling they were not going to take care of things. More of a CYA thing. It turns out to be 8 pages of a How-To-Lose-A-Customer training manual. I have contemplated sending it to the Customer Service rep who was actually the person I was happiest with to give it to whomever would care, but I think I would be wasting my time and effort. I really want it to mean something, but when it comes down to it the only thing that mattters to any company is: Are people still buying? Since they are, upper management will pay no attention. So I am out another $8,000 (loss in equity) but I want to drive this truck and it doesn't turn my stomach to look at it when I get up in the morning.

As long as they don't paint the frames before applying the wax, this will be my LAST GM. It's sad to see local Craigslist ads & salvage yards loaded with parting out GM trucks with bad frames & good sheet metal.

Who ever sold GM on this method took them & the customers to the cleaners. Wasted bail out money IMHO.

They have been dipping them for quite some time now. They screwed the pooch on the model though and then told me nothing is wrong. My wife's Avalanche looked 10 times better and my 08 Silverado looked fine. My expensive 2014 was a damn joke. When the area rep told me that's just surface rust, it was normal I said that not what I am complaining about, I am complaining about the coating falling off. Oh? Haven't come across that before... After pointing this out to them, still get told it's normal. That was it for me. I think there are good trucks and bad truck in this model, just luck of the draw. The frames were not prepped correctly on a lot of the frames and no one would help. I honestly could over look a bad truck in a new model year. It's one of the risks you take buying one. However, to blatantly lie and mislead me is something I will not accept and NEVER forgive. I just hate that I had so many GM trucks before and I am looking at getting my wife out of the one she is in too. Turns my stomach.

A coworker's 2013 Suburban's frame looks like garbage as well. My 2007 Silverado, after 7 years before I sold it, still looked very good. So somewhere between 2007 and 2013 there was a change either to the wax coating product, or the frame prep process, or something. But the severe rust issues don't seem to be new and unique to the K2 trucks.

I wonder why my wife's 2010 Avalanche looks okay. Might be plant specific... Mine was made in Ft Wayne and was a really early build.

Could be plant related. Or the change I'm speculating about happened after 2010.

My truck had rust spots as well that I did not notice till I got it home, didn't think about crawling under a brand new truck to see what the frame looked like. I complained to the dealer I bought it from and they sprayed some sort of oily stuff that dried hard on the parts of the frame they could get to. Didn't know about the rust stuff till I started poking around this forum last year. My truck was built in Ft. Wayne in December of 2013 (bought it in August of 2014). I suspect what they sprayed will eventually fall off because nothing was prepped before hand.

I guess the point is moot anyway. GM has already figured this out, issued a TSB for it and has a fix. The things I see are execution errors. Dealers not finding the TSB, not doing the TSB correctly, area reps playing stupid regarding the TSB and customers are left unimpressed, unhappy and angry.

When it comes down to it, it doesn't matter as long as they are selling more trucks. Bottom line. Whether their market share will drop because of it, who is to say accurately at this point? I think it will take another year before anyone can accurately say if all the new model year issues will drastically effect any kind of profit margins. That is the only thing that drives any company.

Remember the Toyota frame rust so bacd on trucks they broke in half on the lifts? Toyota replaced the trucks or replaced the frames. I am not a Toyota fan, but as far as finally facing the music, they did well. On the other hand, it took years for them to get to that point. Maybe the long term effects need to be evaluated first. You know, kind of like the ignition switches...? I just wasn't going to take that chance or lose anymore than I already had in value.

Still can't get my truck fixed

Because my original dealer claimed they did it( but they just spray painted one spot), no one else will do it.

Gm customer care is a joke

Very very disappointing

Gm doesn't even care that the dealer made a fraudulent claim against the tsb they said didn't exist

Anybody know which coating(s) in aerosol can spray form is used to recoat and touchup 2014 GMC Sierra frame?

http://www.genuinegmparts.com/pdf/techInfo/Anti-Corrosion_Treatment_and_Repair.pdf

I know there was also an ebay link to some stuff "12346501 (GM Part Number)", but it is not shown in link above.

Here is 2010 GM Chemical catalog

http://simonbeckett.wikispaces.com/file/view/2010+GM+CHEMICALS.pdf

"ANTI-CORROSION COATING PRODUCT DESCRIPTION AND FUNCTION: Black anti-corrosion spray to repair damaged underbody surfaces to restore original anti-corrosion surface protection. Meets GM anti-corrosion material spec GM 9985260. CONTAINER SIZE UNIT PACKAGE PART NUMBER PICTURE 11 oz. 1 12346501"

Here's a link to AC Delco chemicals which I have not found the wax spray yet.

This is the stuff you need: https://www.daubertchemical.com/store/product-list/corrosion-prevention/nox-rust-x-121b

I bought a can but haven't had a chance to spray it on the truck yet.

Called dealer today and asked for part # 12346501. They do not carry in stock and only 2 places in Canada had it(1 in Newfoundland, other on west coast), but dealer not willing to buy/ship a whole case when they don't have any other requests for it. They have a larger well known body shop attached who recommended AC Delco 10952414, here's the link:

http://www.acdelcochemicalcatalogue.com/view_picture_description.php?prod_id=37&start=0&page=1&search_frn=undercoat&search=undercoat&custom_search=1

This will have to due for the moment so I can move on with hitch install.

Spoke next with Service dept. to ask for frame rust inspection as truck is 2014 with 25,000km. They suggested speaking to Body Shop dept. who said they just received an email today regarding this issue and from the basic summary they(Mechanical shop) are instructed to pressure wash underside and reapply coating where missing. Not the answer I was looking for, but better than "that's normal". Appointment in 2 weeks and truck required for 1-2days. I will make larger bold instruction sheet not to go willy nilly spraying touch up underneath over everything else and my original natural/white painted underside.

Here are recent underside pics:

After a bit of cleanup for hitch install:

IMG_20150625_163950_zpskohzpotx.jpg

As you can see, you would swear this thing has been commercially used. But if you look at the other body panels it's all mint. This thing moves once every 2 weeks, barely seen winter and 99% paved long haul highway.

I will update later with build date code and AC Delco spray (its messy as he!!, especially upside down), should have worn gloves and full suit and mask as it does not come off.

Here's the updated coating pic. This is not my best work, but crawling underneath holding a crappy aerosol can upside down does help. The first side I oversprayed and second I used cardboard to contain the massive overspray. The roughness is also caused by excessive spray buildup and you can see from previous pics the frame was smooth oter than around holes.

Can't wait to see how the dealer is going to do this, hopefully they will use bulk container and proper sprayer to regulate material and pressure better.
