First time claying

Recommended Posts

Well, after nearly 3 years of ownership, I finally clayed my 2011 Silverado.

This thing needed it BADLY. I used a full 36 OZ detail spray and about a quarter of a 16 OZ bottle. I also used one full piece of clay.

My question is, how do I go about getting rid of spots that will not come out with the clay? I have what looks like some tar and tree sap stuck to the bottom portions of my doors, and my side steps. The clay bar couldn't touch these.

Also, is it safe to polish paint on a yearly basis? Clearcoats today are pretty thin, I imagine it wouldn't take too long to polish away your clearcoat on the newer vehicles.

My plan is to get all the paint corrected, and then keep it protected so I will not need to go through all of this again. The worst mistake I made was buying this truck in 2011 and then basically ignoring it for 3 years. It has never been clayed, waxed, or polished. I am not that kind of person but sometimes you fall into a rut in life and things like the look of your vehicle have to take a back seat to other problems.

Thanks all!

For tar you can uses a citrus base cleaner. That will break down the oils. Adam's All Purpose Cleaner works well for me. Applying a good sealant will help prevent the tar from sticking in the future.
