What type of gas yall use

Anyone running pure GAS in their trucks if so are you getting better MPH or no difference?

 

I run pure gas in all my small engine, mowers, chainsaws, & such. I really don't think you gain a lot in modern vehicles, especially those made to accept E85. I may use it more if the gas would sit in a little used vehicle.

 

How one drives is the big factor in mileage, besides what the vehicle is capable of. The type of tires & air pressure factor in too. Then if one does get better mileage with 91 & 93 octane pure gas, is it enough to offset the higher pump price?

I stick with 87 octane but I buy top tier gas only. Started doing this when I bought my 2014 silverado and realized that DI engines are more sensitive to carbon build up than non DI engines. I think because the truck is new I didn't notice much of a difference when I started using Shell after a couple of Kroger fuel fillups. But my wife's Hyundai Accent has a 4 cylinder DI engine and that noticeably improved when we started using Shell gas in it. So that was good enough for me. I plan to run a bottle of Techron through the engine every oil change on both vehicles as well.

There are more BTUs in E85 compared to Gas so more power but it burns much faster there for the loss of MPG but more power.

Straight gasoline contains 114,000 btu/bal

E-85 contains 81,800 btu/gal

E100 contains 76,100 btu/gal

so,E10 contains about 110,210 btu/gal

For me, I got about 14 mpg on E-85, average 17.5 on 87 octane with 10% ethanol, and got about 18.5 avg on pure gas 87 octane.

On the highway, I found out a trick to bump up the mileage somewhat. If I lift off the throttle each time I crest a hill or when I get to a flat area, it bumps it into V4 mode almost instantly. I can get a mile or two more per gallon that way, even over having it on cruise control.

I have just finished my second tank of premium 100% gas. And I have been driving it like I stole it. Truck seems to run a lot better. I don't know if the computer can tell any difference and adjust the vvt or anything. I suspect a lot of these trucks sit on the dealer lots with very little gas in the tank and it probably takes a while to clean this crap out. My truck came from Mexico and I think it ran like they put a few pints of tequila in it. Also come on you all sound like a bunch of soccer moms with all this mpg talk . HELLO . 4x4, crew cabs. 4 in lifts, 33 s. Grow a pair or buy an OBAMA smart car. :driving:

Totally agree with you.. I can easily fluctuate my fuel mileage +/- 2 mpg by pedal work over cruise.. and my MPH doesn't shift around a lot either.. I have no V4 mode tho. So 6 inch lift 35's and avg 16mpg I wont complain a bit.

I run the same 75 mile route 5 days a week. Half is average 30-35 mph with only two lanes and red lights, the other is 74 mph turnpike. My truck will pretty much do automatically what you do manually. I always use cruise and I've been between 20-21 mpg for the past 8,000 mile.

Truck just turned 10,000 this week.

 

I've tried 93 octane and it's no different than 87 octane. At first I thought I gained 1 mpg with the 93,but after doing a few tanks it's a toss up with either one.

It's hard to get a real feel for what is "normal" for fuel mileage. The best I've ever got over a 50 mile average is 21.8 mpg. But my average stays around 17.5. Mine is a loaded up crew cab Z-71. Are any of you guys that are getting 20 - 22 on average (not best mileage) , driving extended or crew cab 4WD's ? Or are you getting that mileage in 2WD trucks ?

If you live a mile off the freeway and park at work a mile off the freeway maybe. Getting a heavy truck up to speed takes fuel, your average is very good. Even economy cars do better on the highway, maintaining speed is where the mileage is. Yours is normal.

I have a GMC 5.3 Z71 4x4 with 3.42 gears. I get 21.5-22 MPG overall per tank average all day, every day on 87 octane. UNTIL winter, then it goes down to about 19-21 on winter blend gas, and last years winter. Last winter was the coldest, longest, snowiest winter we have had in 30-40 years, so I hope to improve at least 1 MPG overall in a normal winter on the winter blend gas.

 

I live 2.5 miles from the nearest pavement, and most of my driving consists of back and forth to work 55 miles round trip. Drive through 2 small towns on the way, and 55 MPH on the highway with a traffic light at the half way point on the rural 2 lane highway between the two towns, and 5 stop signs each way. I easily get 24+ MPG on the 19 mile stretch between the two towns, with the traffic light at the mid-way point.

 

I just got back from a 3,800 mile trip out West to and through the Rockies. When it was all said and done, I ended up with 21.9 MPG overall.
