4 shocks in the rear?

Why does my 1979 gmc Sierra have 4 shocks in the rear? And if I was to take two of them off would I put the other two on the front side of the axle towards the cab or on the back side towards the tailgate??

A pic would help. 4 shocks could be an aftermarket thing. The common placement on werer trucks is one leaning to cab and one to tailgate

I got the truck from my brother and he used to haul around supplies for the city water work crews I was thinking he put 4 of them on there for heavy loads, but I currently have one towards the tailgate and one towards the cab like you said, I have seen trucks with both shock going towards the tailgate and others with both going towards the cab I was just wondering if it had something to do wwith off roading or somthing

Mine is an 04, but I have one towards cab and one towards tailgate. Our 08 Ram 2500 and 11 F150 are setup the same as mine. Mine is 2wd the ram and f150 are 4wd

Was common back then... Still not a bad mod today
