Front end noise with 4wd engaged

Recommended Posts

I own a 2001 1500 4wd, I noticed that after this weeks winter weather here in SC, that with the 4wd engaged, a smooth sound kind of dry sound comes when in motion.  It only really does it when the wheels are turn left or right, not straight.  It functions properly and has no popping or any type severe noise, I just wanted some opinions on it, and if maybe a front end fluid change may be recommended.  Thanks for any info.  I have this same post in 4x4, so sorry for being repetitive.  Thanks.

i dont think a needed fluid change would cause the noise.

Have you checked the fluid level?  Id start there.

Also is it a growl type noise?  In 4wd hi or auto?

Were you turning on dry pavement?

It was in auto, it really wasnt a growl, and it was one of those noises that you had to be looking for, you know the one where you turn the fan off and radio and just can hear it.  It reminded me off unlubed gears moving, I have checked the boots on the cv axles, both sides look good and tight.  I may just check the fluid, I have not been under it since it happened it has been so nasty.  Thanks for the reply and info!
