The sad thing is that GM most likely rewards those who put in all kinds of dubious suggestions to save money more than it rewards people who improve the design and quality.

"Lets stop selling cars with tires already on them!"

but seriously.. remember under hood lights? They get deleted in every body style. I dont know if my 14 even has one.

The only time I've seen things get BEEFIER in GM trucks was between the 67-72s where the frame components became thicker and thicker as time went on.

Ok, I am new to this site but as a GM tech who has been pushed too far, its time the truth came out! I know for a fact in the northeast, there is a service bulletin #PI056E: and its titled wax coating on frame peeling, metal shows corrosion/ rusting. this covers 2011-2015 GM full frame vehicles.

2011-2015 cadillac Escalade models

2011-2014 Chevy Avalanche

2011-2015 chevy Express, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe

2011-2015 GMC Savana, Sierra, Yukon

What the dealerships dont want you to know is the info i have provided, if your vehicle has rust issues just head to your GM dealer of choice and tell them you see premature rusting on the frame and would like it taken care of. and im sure like any good sleazy GM dealership they will feed you a line of BS, but just tell them that bulletin number and they are required to fix the vehicle at GM's expense plus give you a GM paid rental for the duration of the repair.(which by the way takes at least 4 days)

If there are any questions feel free to contact me, knowledge is power use it or loose it!

Jim,

In your opinion, why do they keep producing vehicles with substandard undercoating protection. Why not correct the problem. Is it that difficult to apply undercoat that actually remains affixed to the frame.

GM advertises the 2014 as having an

"Extensive and improved chassis corrosion protection that enhances the trucks appearance and lengthens the life of underbody components"

Edit: When I sit behind a brand new truck at a stop light and see the diff and frame covered in rust It definetly doesn't make me think the trucks appearance has been enhanced.

Is it really worth my time to go to the dealership for this fix. From earlier posts it seems I may be better off to rep ain't it myself!

I saw a brand new 2014 silverado that someone returned to the dealer for this "fix". When they were done it had undercoating EVERYWHERE. The insides of the wheels were covered in undercoating. The color of the truck was the white diamond tricoat and it had blotches of undercoating in quite a few spots on the paint. I can only imagine the attitude of the lot boy that they gave the job to do.

Well if that or anything like it happened to me I might just go on a rampage through the dealership. There is no reason they shouldn't strive for anything but the best after you a.) buy a $40k+ Vehicle b.) have to bring it back for quality issues that never should've made it out of the factory. And c.) the shear lack of professionalism in trying to return a $40k+ truck with such repair work would just send me over the edge.

I think i E-mailed this to you instead of on the forum, shows how much a do this.

Well I believe they are penny wise dollar foolish. They look for the penny pinching short cuts in hope that it won't bite them in the butt, and now that it has it has only been released as a bulletin and not a recall. It's to cover there legal obligation without drawing bad publicity. and between you, me and the open door, under the wax undercoating is untreated bare metal and in most areas on the frame there is little to no mill thickness of undercoat. A change in the way they build vehicle is long overdue.

Sounds about right. Before I started working for GM I worked for Toyota during the Tacoma/Tundra frame recall. I was lucky enough to be swapping the frames but the ones that got the new undercoating were almost always back the next day getting the paint chemically cleaned due to the over spray.

I wish I had a crystal ball and could tell how the frame will last. I'm ready to trade my 2013 in I'm so disgusted with the frame rust. Its hard to believe though that every suburban, tahoe, avalanche, yukon, silverado, sierra and escalade made in the last 5 or more years is going to rust and break in half I really think that its just surface rust though and the frame should last well past 10 years. What do you think?

Its more of a cosmetic issue than a structural issue, your frame is not going to rust thru and break in half in 5 years.
