Which Engine Oil?

If they are using AC Delco/GM 0W-20 oil it's a syn blend

Thats the part number that was on my ticket. Nothing wrong with a synthetic blend. Been using Valvoline DuraBlend for years with no problemds on my other vehicals. Service manager called it a synthetic when I asked but I knew better. If someone wants the full synthetic with the free changes you will probably have to pay extra. Something else, they changed the 8 1/2 quarts down to 8 quarts. Read it on the Tech Link web site.

Odd they would do that as 9 quarts is barely noticeable being above the full mark.

So the LT1 in the C7 vette for all intensive purposes, is the same as the L86 in the trucks. Yet in that spec chart the LT1 gets 5w30 and the L86 is 0w-20.... I wonder if they found in the high rpms a vette typically turns at the 0w-20 wasn't lubricating as well as the 5w-30.

Interesting that the number of quarts is different as well.

I think that's due to the dry sump giving more capacity.

On the difference in weights, a Vette is less likely to be operated in sub-zero temps, is more likely to be operated daily with more cold starts, mileage matters less for the Vette....

It has more to do with Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) than anything else with GM going to a 0w-20. They sell more trucks than Vettes so the more MPG they can get out of the trucks the better.

I ran a 5w-20 in my 02 Silverado 5.3 and didn't notice much of a difference and the protection was the same as when I used 5w-30 according to my used oil analysis reports.

What is the difference between Amsoil Signature series Synthetic 0W20 ($11.50) and Amsoil OE 0W20 Synthetic ($8.50) other than obviously the price difference?

I got this from the Amsoil website:

AMSOIL OE Synthetic Motor Oil is recommended for vehicle manufacturer-recommended oil change intervals; AMSOIL XL Synthetic Motor Oil is recommended for extended drain intervals of 10,000 miles or six months (whichever comes first) and AMSOIL Signature Series Synthetic Motor Oil is recommended for extended drain intervals of 25,000 miles or one year (whichever comes first). AMSOIL Signature Series Synthetic Motor Oil is formulated with better base oils and more robust additives, allowing longer extended drains than AMSOIL OE or XL Synthetic Motor Oils.

I've heard that the Signature Series is all or contains more PAO (Group 4) base stocks. The OE is primarily a Group 3 base stock. Amsoil doesn't release this information so this is just hearsay.

  • 1 year later...

If I had a vehicle that used a 20w oil, I wold just use a 5w20 year round and ignore the 0w20. Only time anyone needs the cold flow of a 0w20 is if they live in Fairbanks, AK type of conditions in the winter. A 5w20 has much lower NOACK (burn off rate) than a 0w20 and is more shear stable also.

Been running 0w20 in mine for the 25K miles that I have had the truck. Seems to be okay so far. I change it every 5K just because it is easy to keep up with by watching the ODO.
