2014+ Engine & Transmission Tuning

Recommended Posts

This is all great information, thanks. Would you say that the truck would probably heat up towing over mountain passes if it was tuned as aggressively at this? Do you think that a tune with towing in mind could be made with a least some of the improvement you found?

Lol and I apologize if mine cane off wrong. I have a habit of using !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ill try to resist the urge next time. I knew you werent questioning ability but Im not sure anyone has spent that kinda time on one yet. I think alot of peeps(not you icry) on here dont realize the tuning proccess and how a tuner can just take literally like 15 minutes and flash your computer and make it feel pretty good in the seat of the pants!! But the extra time ALWYS yields more and better results!! If we would have spent another hour on it we would have learned even more!! ➡️Please pick your tuners wisely!!! ⬅️ Make sure they have alot of race inspired experience and know what it takes. Now the guys that tune themselves I say to you when you decide to void your warranty and tune it then put alot of man hour into it and do alot of logging and driving. These things are super sharp and will do whatever you tell them to do as long as you cover all your files. We are gonna go back over the tune after I drive it and watch and feel the trans reactions to our settings. Like I said tho the 5.3 acts a little different too and has alot of different numbers than the 6.2 does. Way different than last years trucks.

No the truck will not heat up over a mountain towing. Only time it is heating is at WOT from a dead stop and it started heating around 120-130. Towing is not an issue. I personally tow in the mountains alot and that is what my tune will help but a good tune is a good tune whether towing racibg or cruising but this thing pulls like a train factory so a tune only helps that.

No worries, I play on here just to hopefully help save one person the trouble that I have already been through, I don't claim to know it all but I'm always willing to share what I do know. Speaking of... I don't know how much time you have spent creating a good Trans Tune Config but I have a good one. If anything, it would save you some time and you could use it as a starting point and customize it however you want. Just let me know, I got a pretty good handle on these trannies now with the help of this config.

Oh..Have you gotten the "fast learn" to work on the 14's yet. It won't work on mine, I keep getting a "LO temp" error and it times out. I didn't know if it was a bug in the latest release or what. If you have the same issue, I will just email Bill and have him look into it.

If you don't mind, I'd sure like to take a look at it. I'm still in baby-steps learning mode and it would be helpful to see what you've done.

The info that the OP is providing is consistent with all that I've read re: the new GM Global A platform, which the new trucks use. GM probably won't request a CVN for non-hard-part failures, but a failed transmission or motor will certainly go that way.

I'm curious as to how these new trucks are driving on the stock tuning. I tuned mine myself (EFI), and can't imagine going back to OEM. The 6-spd being tuned for mileage seems to be frustrating for some, and I'm guessing that I'd probably be one of them.

For a "driver" the factory calibrations are irritating at minimum. I have an obsessive compulsive disorder strictly focusing on the efficiency and performance of my vehicles and I would have to say that the 2014 1500 has been the most improved naturally aspirated gas car/truck by simply adding a custom tune. I have had the opportunity to turn up a couple 6.2's in the last couple weeks and can honestly say that I think they are being held back even more that the 5.3's.

:banghead: Damn you Gluttony, Greed and Envy! :sigh:

I wonder if the ecm and tcm could be swapped out from wrecked trucks as they become available to be swapped back in when warranty work is required? I know how many of the modules in newer vehicles are vin assigned and cant be swapped out the only option is to buy it new plug it in and it marries to the bcm vin. The problem isn't so much issues that arise from the tune as much as problems that may come into play on the new gen motor. direct injected motors do seem too pollute oil quickly and we may end up having problems that are completely unrelated but the flashed ecm gives the dealer the opportunity to flag your vehicle as modified and refuse repair. I want to be sure that if my motor eats the cam its going to get fixed.

To keep it simple... NO and you are correct. They cannot be changed out without the dealer marrying the new module to your VIN. At least that is my understanding at this time. Hopefully that is temporary though.

i know when i got my new ecm tune from black bear for my old 04 he would enter the vin into the new ecm so all i would have to do is plug it in and do a security relearn and a crank relearn. im wondering the same could be done to these?

Correct.... That's how I do it but that time has came and gone for the new vehicles. Can't do it for any of the Global A Platform ECU family.

I guess its just a preference then. I like it on mine and would never delete it. I use it regularly on trips for extra mileage. Not sure bout the oil consumption as I been driving a truck without AFM for bout 4 years. Im pretty sure that I could get better mileage with it than without but thats just me.

I know the LML Duramax/allison, the dealer knows if you've flashed it without a doubt. They just gotta know what they're lookin for. The dealer can take torque readings off the allison, if they see more than 7-800 ft-lbs at the input shaft you're screwed...

It's getting harder to trick these dealers, I do know guys that bought spare TCM and ECM and it worked.

Cant do the spare TCM on these trucks, the TCM is inside of the transmission. As said I am sure GM can see the ECM change out as well.

Hey guys, I thought I would start a thread to see who is tuning their own truck. There isn't a lot of information out there yet on the Gen5 Tuning and was just curious as to who has ventured out and decided to bust the cherry on their ECM and make it a lot more fun to drive.

If anybody has any thoughts or questions about tuning in general on the 2014, I don't see why it couldn't be shared right here. I know Ulukslo has some experience along with a couple others that might be willing to share some professional insight even if just to help get the self tuner pointed in the right direction.

I know there is already a tuning thread elsewhere, but I wanted to keep this more 2014 specific since the new GenV's are a whole new bread of engine and ECU.
