2014+ Engine & Transmission Tuning

Karnut. Seriously I cant really just put a number on it because of the amount of responce you get in your throttle!!! If you put it on a dyno the peak numbers will or could have up to 25-30 gains but the numbers across the board are a substantial increase because of trq mangnmt. Forgetting about dyno numbers all together you will lose that lazy pedal feeling and if you drive aggressive at all you will se a increase in MPG under a load and aggressive driving. These trucks are like 10.0 rich on AFR when under heavy throttle and into your power enrichment table because they poor the fuel in. So after a good tune that leans it out to like 12.8 or so you will not use as much gas during spirited driving. A good custom tune is by far the best mod for the money IMOP. Seat of the pants feel is unreal. Just imagine a tune in a handheld that works on every truck thats your trucks model being a 50 out of a 100 score tune. Then the custom tune if done correctly is the 100% tune thats only for your truck. If a handheld can be felt with the butt meter then imagine what a custom tune feels like. Crisp shifts, holding gear longer, no more hunting gears, all your power moves to throttle tip in!! Instant power not held back till middle of RPMs then pulled out again before you shift and then walked back in again to do the same on the next shift. Hope that helps. Get on youtube and look at some new camaros before and after tune dyno numbers and watch the trq curves sometimes its possible to see 80ftlbs of trq gain down low in RPMs because of throttle response. Dont look at peak numbers look at whole curves.

After reading several positive reviews about PCM of NC and the great work that Alvin does with these trucks I decided to have them tune my 2014 Sierra. CorvetteOJ has also used them and had good things to say about his experience. Their shop is in Mooresville, NC about 20 minutes north of Charlotte so it is about a 2 hour drive for me but well worth it. I had them disable the AFM, recalibrate the speedo for my 1 inch larger diameter tires as well as provide a tune that would increase the overall driveability of the truck. It only took him about an hour to do using the HP Tuners software and what a difference it has made! I have 5100 miles on the truck and had been averaging around 16-16.5 mpg on the freeway since I put on the new tires and the leveling kit. On the 120 mile trip home on the interstate at mostly 70 mph I averaged 17.2 mpg. The truck shifts so much nicer and has a much better throttle response when both taking off from a dead stop and when getting on it on the highway. The transmission also doesn't seem to hunt for gears as much either. Now that the AFM is turned off I am going to have the exhaust flapper valve cut out and it may be time to put on a 22" Magnaflow muffler so that it sounds more like a V8.

 

Anyway, just wanted to share my experience and if anyone is looking for a good tuner for these trucks you should look them up and give Kelly a call to schedule an appointment. For $250 you can't beat it.

Thats good to hear I'm about the same distance from them. Trying to get a few more miles on my truck before making the trip. Since it only took about an hour I assume it wasn't dyno tuned. Did he drive it while it was hooked up or did he just load a tune?

He did not dyno tune it. They have a DynoJet Dyno but Kelly said they prefer to tune these trucks on the road for customers looking for better driveability. He drove around for about 45 minutes with his laptop hooked up to it and made adjustments on the fly so it's not a canned tune, it is specific to your vehicle and your needs.

Spent over 4hrs tuning truck tonight!!! Wow I love my truck!! Pulls to 6400rpms now. I fig it would quit pulln around 6 but its still pulln strong. Ill post a 0-100 video in a bit if mods will allow it!

Stock tune wasnt too bad either! Timing wasnt that great but afr was 12.1 factory and gm is usually like 10.2 rich!! Truck responded great!! Really picked up throttle response and pulls all way to 6400 and shifts great!! This is with 22" wheels now you have to remember so with some light weight 17" its gonna fly!!! Had very little KR and loved 22-24 degrees of timing! Only thing is it heats terribly bad on long pulls like to 120 it will get up to 230 degrees! Never did figure out why either!! Trans never got over 205 but when coolant would heat up it would cool down faster than it heated up!! Crazy to me!

I have HP Tuners as well but I'm most likely going to have my friend Doug from East Coast Supercharging tune it. I'm wondering if it leaned out WOT that would cause it to heat up like that. I think GM should have put a 7000 RPM tach in these trucks.

No it heated up from factory just didnt show it on temp gauge! It never showed hotter than 220 it got 237 on one really long back to back run!! But its crazy how it cools off sooooo fast!! Just a second its back to 200

I've noticed the stock programming doesn't turn the fans on very strongly until it gets really hot. Did you guys try setting them more aggressively in the programming?

 

Anyway, it looks like you have it running strong! Congrats!

 

BTW, you say it likes 22-24 degrees of timing? That's advanced quite a bit from stock, right?

Maybe GM set up factory fans to turn off at WOT. Are you just going by the factory gauge or reading of HP Tuners?

that's awesome, I would love to get my truck tuned but might wait for the 3yr 36k mile warranty to expire. now that I have put bigger tires on my truck the slow throttle response at a stop and on the freeway and hunting for gears has been even more noticeable. it's not that truck doesn't have enough power it just takes too long for it to come in.

Did you tune MAF open loop areas and PE with a wideband?

Tuned MAF yes and used wideband yes and yes we played with fan settings alot nothing changed the heating issue but we gotta play a little more to find out.

Stock timing was around 17-18 sometimes 20
