Rebuilt or just heads?

No coolant in oil. The truck is in excellent shape. Maybe we can do the motor now and transmission later this year. Would we have to do anything with the 4x4 transfer case or just the tranny?

4L60E transmissions are a crapshoot after 100k. You got 210k out of that tranny so it doubled its life expectancy. Yiu can find a decent junkyard 6.0 for about $1000-1200. And then do the tranny.

I talked to my local shop yesterday. He told me that if I pulled it out and took it apart, and took it to him for the work, the cost with parts would be around $1500. That doesn't include an oil pump or timing chain, which I might want to replace, not sure. I guess I could add a performance cam while I'm doing this too. From a little research, it looks like I can get a remanufactured one for about $2200.

I don't think I'm going to worry about the tranny right now and if it goes, it goes. But for now it feels good. I don't think I want to even talk to my son about the 6.0, even though he would love it. I've been reading you can expect about 12 mpg, lol.

You definitely want timing chain and oil pump, I would guarantee that the chain is bad and changing the oil pump is just cheap insurance.

Ok guys, here is where I am with this project. I have pretty well decided to put in a crate engine from engineguy. They are about $2200 including shipping and have the oil pump/chain and a 3 year/100,000 mile warranty.

Good idea getting one with a warranty. Around here Jasper's are a big deal cause of the 100k mile warranty. Have to see what they allow as far as modifications.

As to MPG with a 6.0 you probably wouldn't get much of a drop. If the price for the 6 liter crate is the same as a 5.3 I'd get that.

I talked to my son and I'm pretty sure this is what I'll do and a couple of questions. His engine has about 220,000 and less than 40 oil pressure on the highway, so no way I would just put heads on that. I was going to just get a remanufactured 5.3, but for about the same price, I can get an 01-07 LQ4. So, I think that's what I'll do. I know it will stress the 4l60e tranny (he has a vette servo in it), but oh, well. A new 5.3 will stress it a little too.

My questions - does it have to be tuned before being driven and who best to tune it? What is the turnaround on sending my computer in? Also, should we put the electric fans in while we are at it? And it's okay to use the 5.3 intake, right?
