Replacing Interior Wood & Metal Trims

Recommended Posts

Have them wrapped with Carbon Fiber, Probably a lot cheaper and you can always go back to original if you want / need to.

Here’s some pics of mine, I had the metal carbon fiber look but still wrapped them with Carbon Fiber vinyl. i own a graphics company so I have access to the material and can do the work myself. I did all of tis on my driveway at home after work.

did the metal accents on the steering wheel

Feel free to ask me any questions you may have about this. The material I used is 3M 1080 Black Carbon Fiber, it is pricey so you may have to shop around, small shops may not have it and if they have to special order it they will probably charge you more. If you want me to send you a piece of it so you can see it in hands I will be glad to do that too. You can stick it on one of the panels of your truck to see if you like it.’ I did all of these pieces on the truck and didn’t take any of the off and risk breaking them or any of the tabs or mounts associated with them. If you like it and think you can do it yourself I can sell you enough to do whatever you are thinking of changing at my cost.

Let me know,,,

Can you get this stuff in cammo patterns?

Traded trucks, don't need them anymore. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Man I still have a crap load of the 3M CF vinyl, I wish I could find someone who could do my steering wheel inserts like that.

Since you own a graphics company, can you tell me what color of the 3M1080 most closely matches the factory silver/aluminum. I don't want the CF.

Over $200 for this stuff... at this point I'm going to plastidip mine to black or gun mettle. if it comes out cheap looking then I'll peal and go back to the dark wood.

Here's after dipping, though I used flexidip - 1st time I've used and for this application it was nice because the texture is harder vs rubbery feeling :rollin: .

What was the process you used? any tips?

Pull the trim out of the truck and put it on cardboard. Pulling the trim is easy, just wedge in with a trim removal tool and pop the middle open and then work to the ends doing teh same thing. Putting in is even easier, you'll figure that out.

I actually dipped it twice once with black plastidip and glossifier, which I didn't like because it ened up being glossy in an otherwise matte world. But I also didn't like the rubbery/sticky texture of the plastidip, especially inside where legs rub and stuff. I did 3 layers black and 2 layers gloss. Tore it off to reconsider...

Then with the wif at home depot I ran across the rustoleum flexidip. Never used it and they had it in gray so I figured I'd give it a shot. Here's the method, same as plastidip and you can youtube dip your car and they'll go into good detail on how to dip just about anything.

4-6 coats. Spray evenly and smooth, better to you smooth short stokes than long shaky.

1st coat is thin and only meant to creat some texture on a slick glossy surface. 2nd-4 coats are thicker but go really smooth. I usually try to do the edges and the flat top for each coat. let sit 10 mins between coats and 30 mins before putting back in the truck. The flexidip cures more hard and slick as a surface so it's better to use in this application IMO.

Another good tip is to put the can in some warm or hot water to keep the dip inside higher pressured and keep it spraying easier. I use this trick when using plastidip and flexidip and it helps a lot. The difference it makes is more noticeable when the can is starting to run out.

Also if you wait a little while you can use Rustoleum gloss clear coat (or any other clear coat of your choice) and then even wax it like you would the paint on the exterior. The clear coat will help the dip last longer. Makes it harder to remove but it does also make it more resistive to scratching or rubbing off.

Just my advice since I have done the same thing on my truck with all interior wood and aluminum trim pieces

Looks a lot lighter in color than the OE trim. What color did you use? Was it just "gray"?

Does anyone know how to remove the top of the Console/bench seat? Sending my interior pieces off to paint and would like to get this painted too.
