Differential Gear Oil

Recommended Posts

I plan on doing the front and rear diffs this spring. Any problems with either Valvoline or M1 synthetics? I know everyone has an opinion and many like amsoil and royal purple.

Also, all my research indicates that no special additives are required for these diffs, is that correct?

Thanks,

Ron

I'm doing both mine in the spring along with the transfer case. I'll be using Amsoil severe gear for both diffs. And Amsoil for the transfer case.

Oil is funny, a lot of debate on it but in the end they really all are good as long as your not buying generic shop rite brand

The main thing is the change out. Fresh stuff is likely going to be better than the old stuff.

I ran Valvoline syn-blend a long time ago and ran Mobil1 more recently...I personally don't care for Mobil1 gear oil, but that's just me. Stick with a brand name, hard to go wrong.

You will not need any additive because it is a locker and with the g80 it is best to use the fluid from GM. I've read about a guy on were who uses purple synthetic on his axles with his g80 and it works great. I learned the hard was 02 g80 with original fluid exploded with 117K miles

The M1 is pretty good. I have factory fill of M1 75w90 synthetic in my semi truck. If it can handle 80,000 lb of truck pulling some pretty good hills and the differential manufacturer will extend the warranty from 500,000 to 750,000 miles by using the M1, you think it might work fine in your pickup? That being said, the Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90 is a killer product also. So, you do have some good products to choose from.

As far as transfer and transmission, I am solidly in the Amsoil ATF camp. Engines, another brand.

Couple different trucks with M1, no gear problems but did have TWO rear axel seals leak shortly after using the M1, these were low mile rear ends. 10=15K, most likely sloppy gm seal specs from factory.
