issue Radio screen blackout

GM greased me for labor $130 to diagnose the problem.  It’s the HMI module that all the wires connect to behind the glovebox.  It’s going to cost an additional 1200 to fix it.  $800 for the new module and then labor.  You can’t get one and do it yourself because it has to be coded by the dealer to your vin.  Otherwise it is useless per the dealership.  It is only warranties for 2 years and this occurrence is so common the part is back ordered.  GM would not order me a new one without full payment first.  The only other option is to go with an alpine aftermarket system but none the wiring harnesses fit and requires some engineering.  Further they wouldn’t tell me if the OnStar would work.  Kind of a sleazy way to make money Chevy/ GM.  What ever happened to making things GM tough and standing behind the quality of your products?

 Also WAMS (White Audio and Media) can reprogram used modules to work in your truck to save some money. Their customer service is top notch.

Pretty dishonest sales tactic used by GM dealership.  I’m pretty upset.  I’m going to contact an attorney about this.  GM reps / moderators, this is your opportunity to rectify this.

What did they do that you are claiming is a "dishonest sales tactic"?  It sounds like your truck is out of warranty, you took it into a dealership and they gave you a number for how much it would cost to fix.  And it's certainly not unusual for a dealership or even other stores to ask for upfront payment for a very expensive part that isn't commonly replaced.

I have a 2017 Silverado ltz and the screen went blank no buttons for it work and on the dash it says audio off even when I try in star there is no sound, but the lights still on chime works but nothing else need help?!?!?!?!

My two guesses would be your battery is getting old, losing power, or your HMI module has failed.

The stereos in our trucks consist of the screen (a monitor) and the HMI module in the firewall behind the glove boxes.

Think of it as a home computer, you have the monitor, and then the desktop/laptop. The HMI controls all of the functions while the screen is just a display.

Very helpful indeed thanks i have the dash all torn apart already just didn't know what It was called any incite on if I change it im sure it will need to be flashed ..... how much cash that would run me

Yes, needs to be reflashed, can buy one good to go, and sorry, no idea on price for either.

 

I would check with these guys, they are a vendor here on the site.

I’ve got a 2018 Sierra, and when we first bought it the screen would go black then come back on. Radio, Bluetooth, that still worked, but the backup camera wouldn’t come on. Now my screen has been black for two months. It hasn’t come back on at all, but the radio still works. You can’t hook up your phone, because there’s no way to access the Bluetooth without the screen. No backup camera at all, and the steering wheel controls and the buttons on the dash still work with the radio. If you have a phone hooked up, you can still make calls and accept them.  Just the screen is blacked out. I’ve been trying to figure out if that’s the harness, or just a fuse. I might try disconnecting the battery first. Considering everyone has similar problems with the infotainment, you would think GM could be held accountable, but money talks.
