Diary of my Silverado's problems.

Recommended Posts

Wed. 2/5/2014 up date...

Tuesday morning 2/6/2014 got a call from the dealership's customer service manager stating the door had been painted and it looks good. He said they were going to keep the vehicle a few more days to see if they can simulate the starting issue. I told him very clearly that I am not taking this truck and want a brand new one. I told him that the general manager at the dealership and GM customer service regional manager were told the same thing. He told me what I have worked out between them is not his concern that he is only to fix my vehicle properly and inform me of the status.

Made it clear again yesterday to GM regional customer service manager that I have no intentions of taking this truck. He basically said GM lets the dealerships handle these types of issues. I said that's fine and the dealership is aware of my position at this point also. I asked him to contact the dealership and decide amongst themselves where we go from here. Did get an up date via email from GM customer service that they have a meeting scheduled with the dealership on 2/7/2014.

That's all I have for now and yes they did provide me with a 2014 Yukon (rental car with heated leather seats).

Still not bashing GM or the dealership just relaying my truck buying experience so far. Yes there are a lot more precious things in life than vehicles but I feel like I have lost a week of them due to this issue.

There was a guy on www.silveradosierra.com that bought a brand new 2014 Silverado Z71 LTZ, fully loaded, $50k+ and had very similar issues to yours. Not the paint damage, but the not starting, and the dealer couldn't get it to work right.. They started to play hard ball with him, and wouldn't replace the truck, etc.. and GM basically stuck by the dealer until the thread gained thousands of posts of others sticking up for him, stating they wouldn't buy GM after this, and they were holding off on the 14 Silverado until they heard what happened, etc.. and suddenly the owner of the dealer he bought it from had a change of heart and decided he just couldn't sleep at night knowing this guy didn't have a brand new truck, and well you can figure out the rest..

Stay strong! I wouldn't take the truck with the scratch, let alone the starting issues too!

Compare the same senario buddy. It's not like they walked up, scratched it and walked away. They said they'd fix it. So, if you walked up, scratched my truck and then said "I'm sorry, I'll fix it", (as the dealership is doing) no problems - shit happens and it's taken care of.

Maybe unlike you, I bought my truck, to be used as a truck. It will get worked, it will get scratch, it will get chips in the paint and in time, it'll get a ding or two. If they're bad enough, I'll fix them, if not, call them character marks to actually show that I'm using my truck as it was intended - like a truck.

I agree with you, it's a truck, etc. and it's going to be used as a truck and get scratched etc.. I found a few interior flaws in mine when it had 4 miles on it, I figured from the plant.. I didn't even mention them. But again, why do we buy brand new cars? We know they drop the second we drive them off the lot.. We buy them to enjoy that new car for a while.. If we're going to get a brand new fixed car, why not just buy used? I bet most of the one year old trucks on the used lot don't even have scratches on them..

If you leave it on their lot and give them back the keys they're going to have a hell of a hard time making you pay the car note. I don't care what any of the posters on here say, I would pissed off to no end if my new truck had a scratch on it. And the no start...get outta here, I would be through the roof. DON'T TAKE THE TRUCK. They're going to try to put the screws to you. "It's a truck, it's going to get scratched up." Are you crazy? I use my truck a lot, and yes it gets scratched. If I do it I can knock it to me being stupid, but I didn't pay $$ for a truck that's scratched and won't start. Anybody that tells this guy to get over it is crazy.

No offense, but vibration and not starting are a lot more serious issues than a simple scratch, especially when it gets repaired properly. You can have a brand new truck, follow some car in it, and the splash guard or something will fall off of it and land in the middle of your hood and scratch it down to bare metal. What will you do? This happened to me on a nearly brand new car before.

And I had even worse thing happen to my '09 Impala LTZ when it had only about 4k miles on it. I was behind some minivan and suddenly the minivan rear wheel rode over some object on the road, looked like a thin piece of truck tire carcass. This piece was thrown at my car and bounced of my windshield. It did not break or scratch the glass so I did not make anything of it. When I stopped for gas however, I noticed that this object hit my bumper first, scratched it and also nicked it real deep, then hit my hood and there was a dent (not a scratch but visible dent) in my hood, plus some deep scratches. The estimate to fix the damage was $ 700. I had a $ 500 deductible on comprehensive, so I had a paintless dent removal guy take out the hood dent, touched up the scratches and ignored the rest of it. Things like this happen all the time, there is no need to go overboard over a scratch, especially if they are willing to fix it right. After all, they did not do it on purpose.

Something to keep a lot of you up at night....dealerships damage plenty of new cars, fix them and sell them as new unbeknownst to the buyer.

OP, im really anal about my cars too....a scratch if fixed i can get over, a dent is a lot harder for me to get over. Although on any new car, i think most of us can agree we would rather be the ones to put the first scratch or dent on it. The scratch really shouldnt be the biggest issue; especially since the truck wont start. Ask the Dealer to compensate you off the purchase price as a good will gesture, let them fix your truck and move forward, hopefully enjoying your truck for many trouble free miles from here on out. Good luck.

Dealer will not care about making you pay the car note but the bank and finance company will have no problem finding you in default and bring collection action.

Dont agree with alot here..I own three vehicles..2003 corvette,.2009 maxima and my new silverado..there all mint and no scrathes..a scratch would depreciate any of them a great deal ...paint repair is never the same.MHO

Im beyond anal but thats me

Just how much does a car/truck depreciate because of a scratch? Especially one professionally repaired?

1st daily update for Thursday 2/6/2014: (just got home from work sorry for the late or early post depending how you look at it)

I am happy to report that the 2014 GMC Yukon XL SLT (rented from Enterprise) is a very nice driving vehicle even in harsh conditions like what we have here in NE Ohio today. The double heated butt and back seats are exceptional and remote starts works from more than 100' away every time (estimate). This vehicle has over 14K miles and really looks good not a scratch on it best I can tell.

Have not seen my 2014 Chevy Silverado (got my memorandum title today in the mail that says so) since Wed. 1/26/2014. I am really trying to keep my cool and my sense of humor at this point if you couldn't tell.

I just keep telling all my friends and family that GM and the dealership are going to make this right. Facebook friends keep asking me what dealership and I refuse to disclose at this point. The abuse from my Ford friends is getting pretty heavy though as you can imagine.

I will post a link here from the Camaro5 website as I want something to be proud of at this point. This is my 2013 Camaro that now sits in the dealerships showroom with about 8K miles on it.

Great buy even at the dealership markup at this point!!! I can tell you that this car is immaculate with no painted surfaces other than factory as I was at the dealership when it came off the truck. No I did not let them detail it either, damn I wish I would have not let them touch my truck after picking it out that Saturday.

Hey Dylan Adams!!! Are you out there??? Don't ruin your GM connection if you think piping in here will effect it but I ask:

If I do all my detail work as I did with the Camaro, following every one of the steps in your videos, will we notice the painted (non factory door). No I don't know at this point what the paint line stop (blend) was or if they painted the entire door.

The right way for dealer to handle would be, the truck got scratch in make ready come look at it we will go from there. That would have been the time to let him decide what he wanted to do. He would have the option to just get a different one or agree to fix that one. The truck was not titled yet, it was still theirs. They could have fix it put back on the lot and sold it to someone else. Every body would be happy. The ball should have been his court no theirs that's just plain wrong. Its not about the scratch is about deception. I bet if was left up to him he would have took it, he didn't get to make the choice.

Slightly off topic to the original post. Way back 100 years ago in 1989 I took a high school auto body class. The teacher used to work at a large local dealership & was telling stories of cars coming to or being damaged on the lot/test drives etc & being repaired without the eventual buyer knowing a thing about it. My jaw dropped as I could not imagine that brand new 15-20,000 dollar cars/trucks would be scratched/dented & sold.

Now that I do auto transport, it still amazes me what gets passed off as new or even clean used. So yeah, to your point, it happens much more than people think. Just moved 3 2014 K2's in a dealer trade a week or so ago & the right front fender was scuffed on one. Guessing it was caused by someones coat/purse rubbing against it while looking at the truck next to it stacked in the row. It more than likely would rub out, but selling dealer did not much care about it & signed of on the damage report.
