Diary of my Silverado's problems.

Recommended Posts

I'm not expecting you do do anything, my man. I'm merely submitting my point of view given what you've told us so far. But my humble opinion is just that, my opinion. I'm not trying to piss you off or anything like that, but jesus man, shit happens.

In reality things probably aren't "spiraling out of control." It's a car brother. A hunk of lifeless metal put together and cared for by imperfect human beings. Just relax, be thankful that they sat your wife in a loaner (probably) so that she can go to and fro, and let them do what they need to do to make you whole. I'm just trying to help you step back from the proverbial ledge and keep cool. In my experience everyone would be better off, and you'll probably build some good will and they will go further to make it right.

I'll leave it at that brother. I apologize for coming across perhaps too harshly. Good luck.

OP: Don't feel bad by what others say here. Robman: No offense, I am sure you aren't trying to be mean, but you are simply seeing this from afar. It's normal, we all do. We can all look at someone else's problems and say, "Come on, suck it up! It's no big deal, it's a car!!" People do it all the time. People told me I was stupid for being upset when my brand new car got hit.. The issue is, it hasn't happened to you. While it may seem like no big deal, and maybe it isn't a big deal, but at the time, when it's happening to you, and you are the one who has to protect yourself, and make sure your doing the correct thing, and defend against the people trying to make you accept something you didn't bargan for, it IS a big deal. We are only human. Sure it's just a life less hunk of metal, but we as people get attatched to material items. It happens. I can tell you from experience it's absolutely NO FUN to have your brand new car damaged. We all know these cars take a huge value hit when we drive them off the lot, so why do these dealers still stay in business? Because of EMOTIONS. We get emotional, excited, etc. and buy a brand new car. When that car is damaged right away, and your left thinking, "I bought a brand new car, but I really got a repaired, molested, used car" it's not a fun feeling.

I just don't think your opinion is very accurate here. I am sorry, I don't think your a bad guy. If you have some free time search on Yahoo for "brand new car hit" or "accident brand new car" and you will see countless people with the same horror stories. You will also see they all say the same thing. They don't want that car anymore they want a new one, it's not their new car anymore. Then you will see the same replies in most all of them. People coming in, who have no emotional investments whatsoever telling them to suck it up, and "That may be what you want, but that's not what your going to get" type replies..

Starting issue, there is a bulletin for it, known issue. They replace the starter.

Scratch: Have them fix it and I doubt you'll notice. If you do, have them fix it again.

If that's all you have, feel good about it, others have it a lot worse off, enjoy our new truck.

No Bulletin to replace starter. Only for a relay when you encounter a "cranks but will not start" condition.

Wow..this is so ironic..cause the first 2014 silverado I was gona buy but thank god I inspected it before I signed the paperwork..I found a large deep scratch in drivers door 3" long into the metal ..it turned out to be a mess cause I refused delivery and left..they did there best to buff it hard ended up burning the paint into the red and made huge swirl marks while the scratch remained there..I refused it..in order to fix it correctly u would have to paint the door and that's unacceptable for a brand new 40k truck

I ended getting a better deal at another dealership so it worked out in the end

It was a red double cab also..

Idk what to tell u now that u own it

I believe some guys here are mixing apples and oranges. The OP bought a NEW truck which, theoretically was perfect at the time. The dealer, then damaged it and delivered it damaged. He should have left work immediately and came home and drove it back to the dealer and told them to get him a NEW UNDAMAGED Truck. I would have said, if I wanted a damaged/repaired truck, I would have bought one from the used lot. I am assuming the "3 inch scratch to the metal" means they will have to paint the door, not just touch up and buff. That is what my previous statement is based upon. I would never, ever, accept a new vehicle with paint work, especially when it was caused by the dealer during delivery prep.

Allow me to share a personal story. In 1989 I bought a new Pontiac Gran Prix. It had several issues, one of which was an oil leak. With approx 1500 miles on it, I left it at the dealer to get the oil leak fixed and when I went to pick it up, there were two sharp dents in the driver's door, almost punctured the sheet metal. Long story short, they had some old antique lifts and the technician opened the door TWICE into the end of a piece of angle iron on the lift. The service manager knew exactly what happened, and told me, "no problem, we can fix it." I said BS, if I wanted a fixed car, I would have bought one off the used car lot. After a one on one with the General Manager, he called me the next day and said they found a similar equipped car about 160 miles away and could have it here the next day if I would accept it with the 160 miles on it. After he explained the new car in detail, I said YES, go get the car, i will accept it. The next morning, I went to the dealership and swapped vehicles, signed some paperwork, and I once again had a new '89 Gran Prix without damage.

So yes, I feel the OPs pain. He didn't handle it right, he should have taken it back immediately. Never, allow a dealer to deliver a new vehicle to your home when you are not there. The best case sceanrio, put off the delivery until your work would allow you to go to the dealer to take delivery. I have actually had 5 different vehicles damaged by service departments, but the Gran Prix was the only one I ever made them replace. The last one they damaged, was a '98 Vette with less than 300 miles on it. That repair even required doing some welding on the frame, but I kept it.

I did not mean to offend the OP and if I did my apologies. These gentlemen have stated the same thing I have attempted to say though, DO NOT accept delivery on a vehicle that is damaged. I understand your wife was the only one home and I absolutely do not expect her to get in an argument with two men when you aren't there, but it could have been handled differently. I'm actually even more pissed at the dealer for even bringing the truck over after they damaged it, they should have called you and explained before just driving over and saying here you go. Good luck to you and I truly hope this all works out for you.

Interested to hear a follow up from the OP,

If it were me I would expect 5 things:

1) a loaner vehicle (acceptable to me) from the dealer until resolution of the issue

2) The door sanded down are re-painted....I would not accept a touch up buff job.

3) $2000 deducted from the agreed upon purchase price

4) The dealer to not mark a repair on the vehicle's record or Carfax as this will depreciate the vehicle further

5) If the dealer can not meet these requests, I would expect a new truck of equal value of my choosing, or my money refunded, my trade in returned if still available, or private market value for my trade ins if not.

OP, let us know how it's going, or if it's been resolved.

Getting your new truck scratched is not the end of the world. Getting a loved one hurt or killed by an irresponsible driver is a lot worse. Keep things in perspective.

I use this same thought all the time. As a guy whose wife works with oncology patients, life is way to short to lose it over a scratch on a $40,000 truck. Could have been worse, could have been a $50,000 truck - jk

I understand, I've been there, hell I use to live and act like that - you buy something you want it perfect. But life is way to short to get mad over it.

So if I walked up to your truck and scratched it, your brand new truck, you wouldn't get angry?

I understand a comment like your's or the one you quoted if the guy was freaking out, and acting crazy over it, but he is not. Of course there are many more serious things in life, always, but does that mean we need to forget anything that isn't life or death? Do you know how angry most people would be if they lost a $100 bill, let alone having their brand new $40-50,000 vehicle damaged before they can even get in it and drive it? I'm sorry but I think this is one of those things, where, your not expected to pay that $40,000 off, so to you it's no big deal. But I think if you were paying that kind of money, you would stop and say, wait, this isn't right. Something is wrong here.

That dealership damaged that truck, they can fix it and put it on the used lot for a discount, or even still on the new lot with stipulation. But you don't sell someone a brand new truck, damage it, and say, "Oh we will patch it back up for you". At the very least, if they are going to make him accept it fixed they should give him a grand or two off the price.. Ofcourse I am sure that won't happen...

Wed. 2/5/2014 up date...

Tuesday morning 2/6/2014 got a call from the dealership's customer service manager stating the door had been painted and it looks good. He said they were going to keep the vehicle a few more days to see if they can simulate the starting issue. I told him very clearly that I am not taking this truck and want a brand new one. I told him that the general manager at the dealership and GM customer service regional manager were told the same thing. He told me what I have worked out between them is not his concern that he is only to fix my vehicle properly and inform me of the status.

Made it clear again yesterday to GM regional customer service manager that I have no intentions of taking this truck. He basically said GM lets the dealerships handle these types of issues. I said that's fine and the dealership is aware of my position at this point also. I asked him to contact the dealership and decide amongst themselves where we go from here. Did get an up date via email from GM customer service that they have a meeting scheduled with the dealership on 2/7/2014.

That's all I have for now and yes they did provide me with a 2014 Yukon (rental car with heated leather seats).

Still not bashing GM or the dealership just relaying my truck buying experience so far. Yes there are a lot more precious things in life than vehicles but I feel like I have lost a week of them due to this issue.

Compare the same senario buddy. It's not like they walked up, scratched it and walked away. They said they'd fix it. So, if you walked up, scratched my truck and then said "I'm sorry, I'll fix it", (as the dealership is doing) no problems - shit happens and it's taken care of.

Maybe unlike you, I bought my truck, to be used as a truck. It will get worked, it will get scratch, it will get chips in the paint and in time, it'll get a ding or two. If they're bad enough, I'll fix them, if not, call them character marks to actually show that I'm using my truck as it was intended - like a truck.
