Hitch Mount Mud Flaps-DIY?

So who has made a set of hitch mount mud flaps and how did you design it? Our new beast likes to just about coat the complete front of our clamshell sled trailer! Since it is a tilt trailer, the more slop I can keep off the trailer the better!

 

I thought about using 1" square tube as the cross piece. Overkill, or not due to the snow slop weight? I thought about notching the 1" tube around the ball mount sleeve when I weld it. Any other suggestions?
