2014 chevy Silverado active fuel management

Recommended Posts

I have been reading on the net. that the active fuel management uses oil over time. I was wondering if that is something that they have addressed in the new 2014 silverado 5.3s. Or is it an on going problem. Or just people complaining who has abused there trucks. Just wondering. Thanks again .

GM had problems with the AFM system in the past and some trucks were using oil due to bad design of the system. It is likely that they eliminated the oil burning problems by now, but I do not know that for a fact. Some people still complain about rough switching between 4 and 8 cylinders. Some trucks appear to be better than others in this category.

In the 2007 that I drove for six years it would use a quart at about the 5K mile mark. Seeing that I used synthetic oil I only changed when the oil life would drop below 20% and I routinely got 6K-7K miles between oil changes. I suppose that had I changed on the every 3K that I have in every other truck I have ever owned I would not have known or noticed....

Now the rear main that started leaking at 125K miles is a different story and is probably why I am driving a 2014 now.

If you are concerned about oil consumption there is a company that makes a module that plugs into the ODBII port that disables AFM without a full on custom tune.

Range Technology. Currently the module is "beta" testing for 2014 trucks, but I just got mine and it works like a charm.

Hey Fondu, let us know how it impacts the MPG when you have a chance. I was looking at the same module and noticed theres one for better MPG but it just makes no sense turning our trucks into 4 bangers

Word, I will. Only used it for about 20 miles so far. So no telling the difference, other than it stays in V8 all the time. I'm going on a road trip next week and will report my mileage findings when I get back.

So how is it a beast when all the Range does disable the AFM (DOD)................Really!

its just when you step on the pedal and you hear all 8, and your doing like 30 makes it feel so much better

So what your saying is when stepped on the peddle before it would stay in V4? Hmmm.....

Sorry to say this, but the way things are going with the government unrealistic mileage requirements,

it looks like someone will be driving 4 cylinder turbo engine trucks in very near future. With even higher sticker prices.

I can barely noticed the switch between V4 and V8. I had the truck over 90 mph (near Austin where speed limit is 85) over the weekend, and was surprised it switched to V4 mode at that speed. My 2008, rarely if ever went to V4 once you hit over about 70 mph. I drove over 400 miles during this trip and averaged 21.9 miles per gallon.

I do have a question about the active fuel management system. When it switches to use 4 cylinders, it is always the same 4 cylinders that shut off?
