Diesel 1/2 Tons

Viable or is it a vocal minority behind keyboards?... don't know if anyone follows pickuptruck.com but these guys seem to have a fascination with indian deathtraps, vw pickups, and Diesels...... Look, I owned an f-350 Diesel. I wanted a Diesel and Honestly, for a DD it was too much truck, too much maintenance. So, now we've got Ram with a 1/2 ton and Nissan coming with one.... Ford is saying no with the new f150 so did GM (although the colorado/Canyon is getting one)

Not to Debate Diesel because like I said it's got it's place but does anyone think ford or GM are making a mistake? I personally don't... I don't see the market big enough.... Most people that NEED a Diesel for work will go HD, Most people that NEED a Diesel for Mileage aren't going to buy a truck and if you want to tow 9 grand with a 1/2 ton the gas works just fine

It just seems all these internet know it alls were ready to buy the Mahindra truck(Remember that thing) and ready to buy a VW pickup (that would cost about 35 grand IF there was NO chicken tax even) and they have been pissed off about no 1/2ton diesel....

Well now they're going to have 2 options... let's see if it sells. At least GM will have the 2.8 Duramax ready for the colorado and could be adapted to the 1/2 tons quickly if there is demand... Ford just keeps turbo'ing gas motors..

any thoughts?

A Diesel in a 1/2 ton truck doesn't make any since at all. The deal is that its still a 1/2 ton truck, suspension etc. You can put any big motor in a 1/2 ton but bottom line is that its only going to be able to tow, haul and pull based on its 1/2 ton capacity.

I think it would be a big mistake if they put a Diesel in there 1/2 ton.

We've been over this before... But I'll give my opinion again.

The gasser and diesel HD trucks run on all the same running gear. Yet people still buy diesels. The benefits of a diesel aren't just the power and torque. The drivability and economy aspects of a diesel apply whether it's in a Jetta or a semi.

I don't know it's not a big deal my truck gets way better mileage on long drives than most if my diesel friends their tanks are just bigger... It's all in what you want to do to them

Dodge isn't putting a big diesel in their half ton though. They are putting a small diesel in it.

I agree.. The point of a diesel is to be able to safely tow and haul large loads.

The only way I feel it would work in a halfton is if it gets decent mileage. If they could somehow pull off a mini duramax that could get 25ish mpg I think it would be pretty successful.

I'd rather have GM stay the route they are going rather then what fords doing with the really small displacement TT engines..

I think it would be cool, be pretty sweet drivin around in a much lighter truck that can obviously be played with :)

Spicy tuna in a light little truck...sounds like fun to me!

But from a business stand point, I don't think they (half ton diesels) are going to do well. EPA has ruined "the efficient" diesel truck. And our government has taxed diesel fuel so heavily it's becoming the same price or more than gas lately.

I would probly buy one for wife unit tho!! She'd have str8 pipe and hot tune in it within a week AHAHAHA

I'm not sure.

VW is very successful with the small diesel in a passenger car. NOT designed for heavy towing.

At least in Germany/Europe. (and there are reasons for it)

So why not put a small diesel in a 1/2 ton.

It'll make more sense than a "Honda lawn mower triple turbo engine"...

A 1/2 ton with a smaller diesel is exactly what GM needs to do. If they can put a 2.0L Turbo Diesel DOHC engine 148 hp and 258 lb-ft in a Cruz (fairly sure not designed for towing) why can't they find/design a diesel somewhere in the middle for the 1/2 ton? I love my 1500 and will need a new one in near future, but I'm not towing bull dozers or race cars. Dirt bikes, maybe a lawn mower or snow blower. So the mileage gains over the gas is reserved only for HD fans?

I'll conceed that the diesel in the Cruz adds ~$8k to the base price, and possibly would do the same to a half ton PU. But I'm buying.

How about in the 1500 van?
