Intake Sensor Upgrade??

Recommended Posts

I have seen on ebay an intake senser mod that changes the timing on the motor. Is this legite? I haven't heard of anything like this. What does it do exactly?? Does it hurt your MPG??

Thanks!

Kind of a controversial modification since there are conflicting opinions. Supposedly, it will speed the vehicle up slightly.

Opinion ONE:  changes air:fuel ratio to rich, but the computer thinks the ratio is normal.  This causes carbonization of the combustion components, and carbonization of the catalytic converter---all for the sake of a small gain in horsepower and speed.

Opinion TWO.  Makes the computer think the intake temperature is cooler than what it is.  Computer advances the timing a bit, thus increasing low-end power.

My only experience was with a Grand Am with a 3.4.  The modficiation was with a resistor (I forget the value).  I honestly received a nice in-town acceleration boost and didn't need to apply as much accelerator pressure to go across town.  This was especially handy during the hot summer months.  The car felt "zippy".  I didn't notice any improvement with flat-out acceleration.

My thoughts are that this modification will help only small motors and that one would need to experiement with various values of resistors, or the modification will hammer on the brain too much.  I don't see any help for the V-8s.

Personally, I'd say leave it alone with our trucks.  And, as usual, this is all opinion on my part.  But, my Grand Am was very happy with the modification.  Howver, it had a much smaller motor.
