2014+ Truck Bed / Tonneau Covers

Recommended Posts

Care to say what that would run if I wanted the same cover in white also? Also how waterproof is it?

No problem ... it is made by Century and is called the Cargo Lid. They also carry another one called the Silhouette, but that one is a bit too "sporty" for my tastes. This one was (after throwing in labor, etc.) just a hair over $1,000. I think the base price is $950. As for waterproof, since this style has the overhang on three sides, no chance anything can leak in there, what matters is the back edge. If you scroll back up, look at the picture with the open lid - that's a full 360-degree rubber seal in there. It has poured here lately, no leaking whatsoever.

My only regret, is that I didn't get the nice covering for underneath - that fiberglass is damn sharp in some places - I won't go under there without a hat on. But, that's for another day. I also threw a Weather Tech bed mat in there. Anyways, if this is the style you want and it falls into your budget for getting one, here's the Century web site. Just look for the nearest authorized dealer near you, and take it from there. I looked around for a long time, and this one had everything I wanted - low-profile, flat, sharp design, and also - the keyhole is on the back. Many of these have the keyhole on the top, which I wanted no part of. That's just asking for ice hassles, etc., and I'm near Chicago. You know how that goes in the winter.

All good info, thanks. I'm thinking about the Extang Solid Fold 2.0. It interests me because 1. No rails to install. 2. You can open and close gate without lifting the cover. Easy on, off. 4. Supposedly better weatherproofing than previous version.

Does anyone have any first hand experience with this model?

I don't have any experience but I looked into it after I bought my cover. I bought a Trifecta and then found out about the SolidFold. My local dealer advised against it since he said they had lots of trouble with the hinges leaking (even on the revise 2.0 model). He also noted that the solid covers with joints carry a shorter warranty than the soft covers mainly because of the leaks and the hinges wearing out.

That being said, I still like the looks of the SolidFold. You may also want to consider the Trilogy from Leer. It is similar but has more tapered edges:

I have the SolidFold 2.0 for a year now.

Likes: security and convenience of the lid, light weight for easy handling, able to open/close tailgate without opening lid, no rails to get in the way, ability to open it for 2/3 access to bed with it on, and easy to remove when I need the full bed.

Dislikes: has developed slight dips in the top where the front clamps are located, can let in a little bit of water on heavy rain along one side of mid hinge.

The dislikes are minor compared to the overall utility and convenience of the lid.

Construction is good, but it remains to be seen if it will last as long (13 yrs) as my previous one-piece fiberglass lid from my old truck. I suspect not but if I can get half that time with this one it will be worth the investment.

The old one-piece was heavy, cumbersome and hard to remove/store so I will never go back to that design.

First post here, but have been reading the forum for a few months now. Thanks for all the great information so far.

I'm just about to buy a new 2017 Sierra Crew cab Short box, and I want to have a bed cover. I really want something that will keep most of the water out, but don't really want a solid top that makes it difficult to use the entire bed. I think I'm going to go with a hard tri-fold and am looking at the Bakflip and Gator models.

After chatting with the salesperson online, apparently Gator and Bakflip are manufactured by the same company (I was chatting with the exact same salesman on both separate websites, which is when I realized they are the same company).

He told me, "The Gator fx and Bakflip g2 are the same the fx is just private labeled. The Gator fx3 and Bakflip fibermax are the same and the Gator fx5 and Bakflip vp are the same. You can basically look at it like a brand extension. The Bakflip F1 and mx4 do not have a gator name so they are exclusive to the bak name."

Anyway, so that is the information I discovered, which I found interesting. The Gator brand seems to be a little cheaper comparing apples to apples. The salesman is telling me he recommends the Bakflip MX4, which is basically the same as the FX/G2 but with stronger, matte aluminum. I mentioned it rains quite a bit where I'm at (PNW) and he said there is some new sealing technology where it meets the tailgate that might be a little better on the MX4. It lists at $899 and he offered it to me at $809 for a weekend special price. I'm thinking maybe I can haggle a little more on it. Anyone else have one of these, and would you recommend it?

Thanks a lot!

I have the Truxedo low pro qt as well. Real nice low profile cover. Easy to put on and take off. Snaps into place and is released by one handle on the back drivers side. Also has two spring loaded tensioners on the front that can be adjusted for tightness. The Velcro on each side slides with the tensioners, which is very good in my opinion. Best of all it has a life time warranty on everything as long as it is bought new and not second hand. Oh and you can also put box rails on the bed if you choose with this cover as well. Works and looks good on my 14 gmc sierra slt z71.

Thanks for the explanation on how it works. Thats the one that I am getting.

I am now deciding between the Bakflip MX4 and the Extang Solidfold 2.0. Both have the feature I like best. Can open and close the tailgate without lifting the cover. I like the one handed opening of the Bakflip , but I also like the no-rails feature of the Extang. Tough decision.

I chose the MX4 for the tailgate closing ability and the hard matte low profile appearance. I got some water in it yesterday, but that was after some aggressive washing/spraying at the tailgate area. We are having a lot of rain / storms / even tornadoes so I'll check back after the next heavy rain and let you know if anywhere else besides the tailgate leaks.

My local truck accessories shop had mini (approx 2ft x 1ft) scale working models on display for about 6 options, including both of these. Maybe you can find something similar to compare them. Edited by bgweed

I received my Bakflip MX4 today and went to install it only to discover that only the cover and the rails were actually included in the box. None of the other installation hardware or instructions were shipped, so now I have to ask them to re-ship those parts. A bit of an annoying oversight, hopefully they will ship those parts quickly.

So the 6 clamps, the hold-down hand nuts, strut bars, and clips were not included? I bet Bakflip will send them out fast, I've heard a lot of good things about their service; I personally haven't had to ask them for anything (yet?).

Edit: and the weather strip for the bulkhead...

I needed some new rails because mine were slightly bent and they Fed Ex overnighted them to me....I bet they will treat you right !
