2014+ Truck Bed / Tonneau Covers

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, new member here. I like the site, good stuff all around. :-)

I'm trying to decide between a Fold-a-cover G4 and Solid Fold 2.0 but have one question for Fold-a-cover owners and one question for Solid Fold owners.

Fold-a-cover owners : When you take the cover completely off, do you find that the mounting brackets are in the way if you're loading stuff/working in the bed? The striker latches look like they could be pretty hard on your knees if you're up in the bed doing something. Do you find this to be an annoyance?

Solid Fold 2.0 owners : do you feel like the cover is reasonably secure in the middle section? Since the latches are only at the 4 corners, does the middle come up at all? Does it still seem reasonably secure?

For the record, I'm in the camp that if someone wants into the cover, they're going to get in. I'm not going to be keeping the crown jewels back there, but I'd just like to know that someone walking by can't pick up the edge and peek in with their bare hands.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Did you take a look at the TonnoPro Hard Fold? I was in between the two covers you mentioned and while I thought there is no way the TonnoPro could be as good for the price, IMO it's the best of the three, especially considering the cost. Looks just as good as any other soft cover but has aluminum beneath to stop thieves from just cutting the top. I know two guys with one of each of the other covers I am not terribly impressed with either.... I'd give the edge to the Solid Fold as I would hate to have to keep a separate key for the FAC.

I don't have a SolidFold but I have a Trifecta that uses the same mounting latches. I have never had trouble with it lifting up in the middle.

I would also look at the Leer Trilogy. It's a fairly new entry and seems to be a little lower profile than the SolidFold:

I went to Youtube and looked at the Trilogy. I believe it came out in 2014. I don't think it has a lower profile than the Solid Fold, but it does have a beveled edge which makes it lower just around the edge. The Trilogy does not have spring loaded clamps like the Solid Fold (I think the spring-clamps are a plus), but it does have a small integrated LED light.

I did look into the TonnoPro but the reviews I found seemed more mixed than the reviews on the Solid Fold 2.0. I like the way the Leer Trilogy looks and given it's a Leer, I'm sure the quality is there but I wasn't able to find many reviews on them.

I just purchased the Bakflip MX4. It was a breeze to install and I just couldn't pass on a premium hard fold cover for $611(regular price $899) I purchased it on Amazon as a returned item. Look under the used column they go pretty rapidly so check often. Mine ended up having just a few minor scratches that are barely visible. Very pleased with the cover.

New guy here... kinda wish I found this site a bit earlier.

I decided to get a Bak Revolver X2 and installed it tonight.... the cover was delivered quickly, installation was straight forward, and the build quality seems nice. But that where the good comments stop.

See the video below for the reason why I took it back off immediately. Tomorrow I'll have to contact the dealer and see if swapping it out for the MX4 is possible or if I'm stuck with it.

As you can see just pushing down on the cover makes it flex like it's just vinyl but since there is aluminum in there it rattles too. I'll ignore the rattling since I have no idea if it would rattle while driving... since it wasn't on long enough to find out. I really feel that it isn't secure at all, not with all that movement. The latching part is a bit annoying too, I knew that you had to physically push it down (instead of the hard cover where you could just drop it in place) but you need both hands since there is enough flex it in to allow one side to latch without the other. It seems like the latching panel would be easy to pry up too.

There is a chance that I'm being too picky, but as of right now I definitely like the hard folding design better. But not EVERY panel has a latch on it for the 6.5' bed.

Silly question, but did you have the cover latched when you made that video?

Sent from my MotoG3 using Tapatalk

If reference to Bakflip cover deals...a couple hours ago I visited their website. The chat popped up on the side. I asked for Black Friday pricing. I placed my order for a MX4, Part Number: 48121 with Kyle. $809.00 shipped to my door. Expected delivery date, Wednesday the 16th.
