No luck!

Recommended Posts

I first posted here looking for feedback from anyone who might be having rattle issues with their new 2014 GMC Sierra. Well, I took my truck to the GMC dealership yesterday to have the rattle issues and the clunking noise looked at. They couldn't pin point the rattle issues in the cab area. However, the one that concerns me the most is the clunking noise (almost like a banging) I get when I accelerate. They could hear it...but could not find it. It's getting louder and I can sometimes actually feel it up through the accelerator pedal. It almost sounds like a bad U-joint...although I know it's not. They ruled that out along with any loose suspension bolts. It's definitely puzzling. I was just told that I will just have to live with it for now...because they have no answers. This is a reputable GMC dealership here in Wichita Kansas. So, I'm at a loss. I've researched the web and have found nothing...although I've come across several blogs that people have written explaining their own rattle issues with the new 2014 GMC Sierra. I might try taking it to another dealership for a different opinion. Other than that...it looks like I will live it until something finally breaks or GM recognizes the issue and publishes a service bulletin or recall. If nothing else, I will probably keep this vehicle for about a year and trade it for something else. I've always been a GM person...but am seriously considering looking at another brand. It's a beautiful truck...but beauty only goes so far. A person would think that a vehicle that MSRP's for close to 50K would not have any issues at all. That cost more than the first house I bought 30 years ago...lol. Either way, in my opinion GM's quality control has gone way down. I've owned 2 GMC's...both crew cabs and 4WD's. My 2008 GMC developed a rattle deep in the dash at around 80k miles...never did find it. I've owned several chevy trucks through out my life and ironically...I don't remember any of them ever having any rattle issues in the cab or out of the ordinary clunking issues...even after they reached over 200k miles.

Some people with the Z71/Rancho rear shocks have had a clunking noise at times from the back end, especially when cold that appears to have been due to a faulty shock, replacing the shock solved the problem from the posts I remember reading.

Thanks! I mentioned to the dealership that some people have had trouble with the rear shocks...but they didn't seem to think that was the problem. Anyway, I definitely will be getting a second opinion.

I feel your pain man! I have a new SLT crew cab with the 6.2 liter engine........build date was the week of January 6, 2014. On the highway, the truck is awesome, but around town at lower speeds and lots of shift changes the noise and feel of the clunking is very obvious. I plan to get under the truck with a video camera and have someone shift back and fourth into forward and reverse to see if I can capture excess play in the joint - either way, it will be going to GM service......a shame for a $53K truck!!

I can almost guarantee that GM will do nothing about the clunk. This problem is common in GM trucks and it seems to vary from truck to truck depending on the actual dimensions of certain drivetrain parts. If you have the worst case part tolerance stack up, you will have the most obvious and loudest clunk. The most likely answer from your GM dealer will be the dreaded "NORMAL"!

@PM26......you are exactly right. Apparently my diff gears are at the far end of tolerances and while in spec, the dreaded "Normal" was the response. It was good to see that the dealership did check out a couple of 5.3's on the lot and found the same clunk, albeit not quite as loud. There was one 6.2 on the lot with the same issue as mine and just as loud. I've owned a lot of vehicles and admit to being sensitive to aberrations in performance. But after shelling out $50K for a new truck I expect perfection. I'm going to keep this vehicle as the good overrides the bad....but I am not happy.
