Halogen & LED Headlight Bulb Upgrades

Recommended Posts

Did you put ballast in or outside of headlight housing? If outside how did you run wires? Are you still happy with the product?

I just put everything inside the housing for now. I love the light output, but I HATE the noisy fans. When the truck is off you can hear them running from 20+ feet away. The guy who said they are "whisper quite" must be hard of hearing. And I just don't trust those fans. If (when) they go out, the light will overheat and either 1. go out, or 2. melt/catch fire.

I have the XenonDepot light as well, and will probably switch them out with because they are fanless, and the ballast is about 1/3 the size.

I hate to tell you this 2 speed, but you have defective units. All four of my fans are whisper quiet. I cannot even tell they are running. I have to put my hands around them to feel it. Either that or you have something wired up wrong I don't know maybe your fans are running backwards? But all four of mine are extremely quiet and cannot even be heard whatsoever. So I have a tendency to believe the manufacture :)

Plus, I've never heard of any fan for any LED light or HID to be that loud anyway. Just doesn't sound like something is right there.

Mine are still inside of the housing, but I cut out really big holes in the dustcovers and it is exposed. I really should pull them out and mount somewhere, there is a mounting lug on the ballast. I just haven't done it yet because I'm lazy. And I feel that because I have big holes in the dustcovers that I'll probably have sufficient Air movement for it not to cause a problem.

Also, the lights get hot in addition, so even if the ballast wasn't there, I would be a little worried having everything closed up. My long-term goal is probably leave it exposed and see what happens. If I start getting condensation or water inside of the housing I may rethink this.

Maybe it's the housing? You have the Chev, right? I have a GMC, I don't know. But they fans are definitely spinning the the right direction. The polarity is correct. They are just LOUD. The fans aren't defective, just spin at a very high speed. The fan cage may be touching the dust cover, too. That could be causing the noise. But it's from both lights. That would mean both lights are defective out of the box. I wouldn't think that is the case.

At any rate, I don't like the design as much as the XenonDepot lights. I hate to rely on a small chinese fan to cool the lights. I'd rather have the passive heatsink on the XD ones. I'm going to send these back.

I will take a video and post it if I can.

Yeah I have a 2015 Chevy Duramax 3500 crew if that helps any. Plus looks like WLC just installed them and quiet. I agree, two defects very odd. Maybe the dustcovers are putting pressure on them? Make same noise with out covers on? Can't belief you don't like the looks, they BLAST!!

WLC look forward to update!

^^^ I have to agree 100% at this point. ^^^

These are the lights from Amazon I installed yesterday (same as Plumber101010 above): http://amzn.com/B00WUG1A8I

I drove home last night and I have to say I was completely blown away with how bright these things are. They aren't blue at all, just a bright white like an HID. Very similar to my wife's '14 Acura MDX (which has the best stock HID's I've ever seen) . Excellent cutoff. High beams are actually HIGH! I could see street signs lit up brightly a half mile away! I definitely believe the 3400 lumens per bulb that's advertised.

I think I am going to mount the ballasts outside the headlight housing as well. There's just too much heat inside those housings with the bulbs and the ballasts both. I'll drill a small hole in the dust cap and seal it with a rubber grommet and some silicone.

The dust caps go back in place with no problem. There is plenty of clearance for the fans. I wouldn't run without the dust caps because moisture will get inside and fog the lens. With the ballast on the outside, the fan should keep the bulb cool enough.

My biggest concern is longevity because of how hot the bulbs get. The PCB under the fan will most likely fail pretty quick if (when) the cooling fan fails. The fan itself looks like one you would see on a low-end PC video card. But who knows. For $80 shipped, there's nothing that will come close.

Did the 9005 fit without modification? I thought the 9006 was the size that fit in a 9012 housing?

Tried lights after dark, they are bright.Time will tell if they last or get too hot for the GMC. Did use toenail trimmers on the 9005's and turn the plug around. Just takes a second to trim!

I installed the Starnill LED lights listed above a few days ago. First impressions, good God they're bright. I do have some concerns though.

As seen in the pictures they are muuuch brighter but I have litterally zero cutoff. I'm lighting up highway signs half a mile away and probably causing blindness for many. From other running these in the Silverado refelctors any issues like mine? Anything else I can do beside adjust them down a little?

More pics than necessary but I wanted to show a good representation of what I'm seeing.

One thing to add - On the install, be careful with the cages over the fans. They are like cheese graters! I woke up today and it felt like I had calluses all over my left thumb and forefinger. Upon closer inspection, i realized my skin had been chewed up as if by tiny razor blades. Not deep enough to bleed, just enough to grind up the surface of my fingers. Wierd!

Just a heads up

I forgot about your advice when I installed mine and have "cheese grater thumbs" too.

I bought these, http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WUG1A8I/ref=cm_sw_su_dp

The 9006 fits in a 9012 socket even though one tab is a little larger than it should be, so i clipped it just a bit.

Agreed, they are much brighter than stock but they do not solve the problem of side of road lighting as much as I hoped. Forward lighting is acceptable.

I already have Putco Nite Lux in my fog lamp housings. With all the LEDs together, my ability to see the road is restored.

I put the ballasts in the housings.

Some install pics:

That's where I ended up putting the collar. If you'll notice, one of the cooling fins is an arrow--when that is pointed up after installation, the blade will be horizontal. With the collar as shown, the arrow will be at 90 degrees, making the blade vertical. For depth, I ended up screwing the collar all the way on until it stopped, then unscrewing it about two and a half full turns until oriented as shown. Unscrewing it farther will give a wider beam pattern and a cutoff that looks a bit cleaner, but as the pattern gets too wide it starts to have a dim "gap" in the center. I suggest playing with different settings until you're satisfied though, don't just take my word for it--production tolerances in the projectors may call for different settings as well.

They don't come with a grommet, I stuck that one on where it eventually goes through the cover. I wish they had given another inch or two of line between the box and bulb as it's tight making those fit.

The new cover giving the bulb space:

I double-sided taped the control box in that spot. Once I'm sure I'm done messing with them I'll glob some silicone or something into the grommet to seal up the hole completely. That's it, very plug and play.

Did I forget to mention they look pretty good?

These are the 6000K. My PIAA LED fogs are also supposed to be 6000K and I'd say these headlamps are a bit whiter than those, but the stock LED signature lights are a bit more yellow. These are a very nice white color.

any updates on these? Any issues or regrets??
