110 volt AC outlet

Recommended Posts

First off let me say I am loving my new truck. No buyers remorse, but a few minor things I'll be changing down the road. One thing that I noticed today is the 110 volt AC plug is pretty much useless. I was super happy to have that plug! Now, not so much. Wife needed to do some work on the trip home from the farm (common occurance) and it would not charge her laptop. I tried mine and same thing. I checked the power bar and it draws 1.5 amps, so at 110 volts thats 165 watts. According to the manual its max 150 watts....lame. It's a simple 15 inch laptop.....wtf? So this is only good for charging tablets ?

Any one know if it is possible to increase this to 300 watts by changing the internal breaker? I can hear it flip on and off when I plug the laptop in. I guess til I can make this a useful plug I'll be taking the noisy little adapter out of the old truck and plugging it into the DC.

The capacity of the wiring is what determines what size breaker or fuse is used. Even if you do manage to change out the breaker, if the wiring isn't designed for more than approximately 1.36 amps, you could do some damage by overheating the circuit if you allow more current flow than that.

To be safe, you'd have to find out more about the circuit components before you increased the breaker size.

Why not plug the laptop into one of the USB slots?

That does suck though, haven't used it yet but know there are a handful of uses I know I'll want in the summer...

USB power cord?

So, what can it be used for it you can't even charge your notebook?

I have used it to let my grandkids play a DVD player in the back, they watched movies for two or three hours back there.
