The Interior "Snap, Crackle, Pop" Thread

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to chime in here on the noises. Cadillac (GM company) has a test cd that they order when owners are experiencing vibration issues.

http://sandyblogs.com/techlink/?p=2568

The link above may help to give you guys some ideas for DIY fixes to some of the issues you can source on your own. I know the link is for an ATS (I owned one just before my current Silverado).

the GM Diagnostic CD is referenced as well in the link:

"The EL-50334-6 Audio System Diagnostic CD contains audio tracks that can be used to duplicate and isolate such conditions."

If any of you head to the dealer may see about referencing this test CD. It is great for creating a lot of the same frequencies to cause the vibrations. You can also do a frequency sweep to help you find any of those issues.

I used the above test to help show a dealer on my Cadillac the vibrations I was hearing.

This is the second time in 2 weeks I've taken mine in for a wicked vibration/rattle on the drivers side. I actually took the service writer for a ride and never got over 15 mph and you could hear it. At 40 mph it's constant you hit a bump its very loud...you sit a series of bumps, rough pavement or a dirt road and you can't stand to be in the truck. Passengers can't stand to ride in my truck...my coworkers insist that they drive because they're afraid my truck with 4,600 miles is going to vibrate apart while going down the road. I purchased the truck in February.

The seats moving "can't be duplicated" last week the vibration "couldn't be duplicated" The hard shifting "couldn't be duplicated"...so they only fixed half the shit wrong with this truck.

For vacation my wife insists we rent a vehicle or we don't go...that's how bad it is.

I had a 2009 ext cab z71 Silverado, a 2012 crew z71 Silverado and now this Sierra.

At this point...I wish I would have bought a Ford.

I found a major rattle vibration!!! So the trim plastic cover over the side (#1 in the photo) I reached over and pressed that down a little harder and instantly the rattle was gone on mine. I added some double sided foam tape to settle it down and so far so good. I need to get some felt tape to quiet the sunglasses holder next but can't find that tape anywhere.post-133203-0-79651100-1414420160.jpg

On our 2014 LTZ-Z71 the smooth plastic piece that is in-between the front dash speaker grills (the part of the dash that almost touches the windshield) has started to warp and now protrudes above the padded dash in two spots at the seam.(OUR TRUCK IS LESS THAN 1 YEAR OLD!) Since this happened “most”, but not all of our snap, crackle, pop has subsided. The plastic warping makes the dash look like crap but the window rock strike sounds are not as bad now. We can also confirm popping/cracking sounds coming from the plastic cover/trim piece that surrounds the backside of the radio knobs.

My seats still "move" and the shifting is the same but the vibration/rattle was the dash knee area trim piece...apparently every screw was loose. I took it in again and took the tech writer for a ride. I pushed on this area before taking it in and couldn't get it to stop or even quiet it...but it is quiet now.

I don't think GM could've made that plastic piece any thinner or it would've been painted plastic wrap. Mine is slightly warped in 2 locations very minor...if it gets worse... it's going back in.

1) Driver's seat squeak/burp/fart sound - Cause: the left side of seat's leather rubbing against plastic trim. Status: not resolved.

Did you or anyone else fix this leather seat rubbing issue yet? Now that the weather is getting colder, I hear this rubbing sound everytime I get in my truck. Yes it's obvious it's the seat rubbing against the plastic trim on the side of the seat. What can you stick down in there to get rid of the noise, some felt or something?

#4 I applied felt tape to the mounting pins that hold down the front of the panel and the metal clips. You have to take both A-pillar trims off to remove it.

Where did you find the felt tape? I can't find any reference to it to buy.

I feel your pain with #3 and #5! Ever since they replaced my heater core theres a vibration under the sterring wheel or it evens sounds like its behind the cluster. Ive had the dealership try to find the rubbing squeaking noise from behind my rear passinger side seat and they cant ever duplicate it (a deaf man could hear that crap). I'll try some of the methods on here and see how it goes from there. Also do any of yall have the problem of your door controls rattling from the speaker subs?

Just bought a 2014 Silverado WT1 regular cab long box a few weeks ago with just a shade until 500 miles on it so far. It has its fair share of squeaks, rattles, and groans but the absolute most annoying one comes from directly behind the seats. If I put a moderate amount of pressure on the plastic just below the rear window while I'm driving, the rattle goes away. I've considered trying to fix the rattle myself but don't want to accidentally break something in the process. Has anyone with a regular cab experienced this and fixed it? If it's a simple, quick, and easy fix then I'll just do it myself but otherwise I'll likely make good use of the 3 year / 36k warranty because nothing drives me more insane than a vehicle with rattles... especially a brand new one!

I've noticed a lot of us are having interior noise issues. Thought I might try to compile a list of what I've experienced with my truck & what I've seen on here.

If you acknowledge or add to this list, PLEASE include your truck's make, model, cab type, and build date (or purchase date if you don't know build). People can't see your signatures on some mobile devices. Thanks.

GMC Sierra SLT Crew Cab built 6/2014

My truck's noises:

1) Driver's seat squeak/burp/fart sound - Cause: the left side of seat's leather rubbing against plastic trim. Status: not resolved.

2) Driver's seat popping noise - Cause: unknown. It happens when I lift/lower my weight off/on seat. Status: not resolved.

3) Rattling noise coming from panel below steering wheel, in front of driver's knees - Cause: Metal backing vibrating against plastic panel. Status: DIY fix. Removed panel and slid a piece of cardboard b/w panel & it's attached metal backing to prevent vibration.

4) Rattling noise from behind center stack. Cause: Plastic panel over windshield dash vents hitting against underlying supports, especially near the light sensor. Originally I thought the sound was coming from behind the radio/climate controls but the way the windshield reflects the sound tricks your ears. Status: not resolved. Will likely attempt another DIY fix b/c dealership takes way too long.

5) Squeak/rattle from rear seats - Cause: debatable. Sounds like it's coming from seat hinge mechanism or possibly hanger behind seats. Definitely my most annoying noise to date! Status: not resolved. I've attempted several times to locate & correct but no luck. Debating if I'm going to go further & remove seats or just let dealer handle this one.

Other noises I've read about but thankfully have not experienced myself:

6) Noise from rear cab.. exhaust - Cause: Exhaust heat shield tapping against underside of cab. Fix: bend metal away from cab

7) Noise from rear cab.. window - Cause: Rear sliding window. Fix: add weatherstripping. (hopefully someone else will elaborate on this one)

Thanks

Moto Medic,

Did you find a fix for #2 - the drivers seat popping noise? Mine just started doing this last week. Thanks!

Have had an annoying rattle round on the slightest bumps that I can't pin point on my crew cab 2014. I too have the popping noise on my driver seat when I get off and on the seat. When I push on the seat I hear the piping sound of like a crushing plastic bottle. One day I'll take it back In on my next oil change and let them play with it for awhile. Not to mention my eject button on my CD player doesn't work at all nor does it recognize the cd that is stuck in there.

gbieber05,

Did you ever figure out the seat popping noise when you get on and off of it? It's starting to drive me nuts! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
