2014+ Exhaust Systems & Mufflers

Recommended Posts

Got my Borla S-Type installed finally. I love the way it sounds both on initial start-up, cruising on the highway, and when you get aggressive with the throttle. Can't wait to get my headers and Y-pipe installed now, though it will bw a few months until that happens...

Will installing a GM Borla kit for a 6.2 on a 5.3 have any negative effect?  I know its not a direct bolt on due to the size difference in ball flange.  Just debating if I should just sell and get correct kit or cut and weld a correct flange on pipe.....
In my limited knowledge yet extensive research I would think using the 6.2 liters exhaust would have a negative effect on a 5.3. I have the 6.2 and the exhaust pipe size is 3.5". I would bet you'd lose some torque down low in the rpms do to not having enough exhaust gas velocity.
In fact I've wondered if the 3.5" is a little big for the 6.2 even.
However maybe Borlas kit is 3" like some others which may be ok. What size is the pipe in Borlas kit?

The 6.2 uses 3.5 to the muffler then 2.75 after the muffler i believe stock so I’m not sure how negative an all 3” muffler back would be on the 6.2?

I'm only speaking of what I've seen on my 2011 6.2 and my 2015 6.2. other than a couple spots it's necked down to about 3" the rest of the pipe was 3 1/2" all the way to the exit. I have the entire stock system in one piece from the cat back in my garage so I'll try to measure it when I get home.

My ‘17 6.2 was 3.5 to the muffler than 2.75 i believe after that to the “tip”

Well got the exhaust installed tonight. I was able to do it in the dark with some spotlights, two hours from walking outside to cleaning up. Myself only, no help, and only had to jack up the passenger side a little bit to get the old exhaust out. The GM borla kit sounds absolutely perfect, actually a little louder than I expected but still quiet in the cab. Fit was dead on.

My friend had a similar situation with his 15 Tahoe.  Got a GM Borla off of ebay from a salvage place, turns out it was for a 6.2 Yukon XL.  Got a 3" flange installed and middle pipe shortened and everything else bolted up.  Been running 2 months with no issues.  Its not very loud unless you are on it but it sounds good.  FWIW both systems muffler is dual 2.25" out.  I didn't do a calculation but I would think the most restrictive component after adding either system would be the cats.

Since hearing that GM is ramping up the dreaded Active Fuel Mgmt. to drop to ONE cylinder on the T1 trucks, I've been curious what the aftermarket exhaust will end up sounding like.  My grandpa had an old 1 cylinder john deere tractor...not a very sexy sound.

Not that I can get with my iPhone that are decent. There are a few on YouTube I found that are pretty accurate if you search. It’s got a good startup note and isn’t too loud under load. Lay into it and you hear it real good. Cruising around town or highway there is no drone or ‘helicopter’ noise in V4. It is a very good quality and I am very happy with it. I do think the flapper valve makes all the difference.

Again, I found it for $999, tips were $116, and got 5% off.

I also had the overpriced GM Borla dual rear exit exhaust installed on my 2018 SIlverado 5.3.   It is significantly -  but not obnoxiously - louder than stock and plenty loud for me.  You definitely know it is there at all times.    My only gripe would be that the rear pipes of this set hang down much too far, especially since I went with muffler shop 3" tips instead of the more expensive larger 4" Borla tips.    Apparently it will void the warranty if I have the shop move the pipes up, but I'll probably have that done soon regardless.
