2014+ Exhaust Systems & Mufflers

Recommended Posts

I listened to youtube and have not heard much difference. Any insight from members who have either would be nice.

Yeah i listened as well but the best i can make on camera is a little more growl in the 40085 round XR1 vs a little more refined tame sound in the 40086 oval.

Exhaust didn't help my mpg all that much at all... it'll help with a little power and maybe a tad with exhaust. Tune would be your best bet though.

Yeah i'm not really expecting it to help that much, i'm just thinking the cumulative effect of an AirRaid MIT, Exhaust, and a blackbear tune would really help with the big tires and just throttle response in general. And i hope maybe a MPG better or so.

My cousin's 2009 sierra 5.3 gets 17mpg coming from Tallahassee FL to Northern MS with just straight piped flowmaster and a blackbear tune. Granted he's now regeared to 4:10 because his transmission went out, but he was managing with 3:42 getting around the same. So i assume the tune really does help.

I got pure gas yesterday and cruised back home at 45mph and was managing 17 lol, stock tires here in the delta cruising like that i'd be in the 20s, especially with gas. There's no telling how bad it's going to be with an ethanol blend. I'm going to shoot a match at K&M on 24th that will be the tell tell of how much of a hit i've really taken.

I have an Airaid MIT and a magnaflow 14" and i feel like the cumulative effect is definitely worth the investment. I got my exhaust done custom from a local shop and it was a great experience. If you have a local shop that will bend their own pipe, I really recommend the set up I have.

My tires are the same height as yours, probably a little lighter though and I can get 17 while doing 75 on the highway and i have 3.42's

The tune will help the most with the MPG's. Blackbear or Diablew seem to be the best bets on those.

I'll be going Diablew personally.

Do you think the MIT had any effect on your exhaust sound, or just the air intake sound under the hood?

Truth be told i can't say it was worth the money, less i was getting 15 or 15.5 before i got it i've got 16.1mpg over the last 30,000+ miles. It makes a little noise, sounds much better than the stock intake, and holds some gears longer but over all it's pretty pricey for sound.

I had the MIT on before i had the exhaust so I can't tell you for sure.

I took some decibel readings in my truck with the stock intake, and afterwards with the MIT tube. Cold start, warm start, gentle take off with shifts at 1500rpm, and cruising had identical db readings. Harder acceleration though did increase the db reading by 3 db over stock. So it's not much louder, but the tone from the engine makes it seem a lot louder.

Yeah when you stomp it, there's a noticeable rumble.

Been trying to find a definitive answer on this. Is there any benefit to saying doing an X-Dual setup versus a single exhaust setup with a split back?

Also can you have headers that aren't screaming loud?

I'm pretty sure you can get short tube headers for these trucks. Since they still go through the three cats it wouldn't be overpowering. I'll do a little more research and report back.

EDIT... this replaces OEM exhaust manifold. Shorty headers $249.

If you went shortys with a quiet muffler I don't see why not. Where I live there is a shop my friend seen that I guess hones the inside of the stick exhaust manifolds keeping the stock look and fit, but with improved performance. I'm going to check in on this myself before I fully believe it though.

That's my only issue is i want some sound. Hate and i mean hate the way our trucks sound right now. Don't get me wrong i know some like the silence, but man it sounds like a golf cart and an electric one at that. I was looking at comparisons of short tube headers versus long tube, and most everyone seems to agree long tube is much where the performance is, but it's also where the cost is, they're notoriously expensive compared to short tube headers.

I wonder if short tube headers, an intake, and exhaust compounded with a tune will still be able to net 15-20hp at the wheels?

I dont know how you can beat TSP headers for the money. My GM Borla is perfect for now, but when warranty is up gonna be real hard to not be putting those in the next day with a tune.

Shorties seem like a waste of money to me unless you have a really tight space like on a swap car, or real low clearance on a slammed car.

3 years ago we were driving home from the dealership with a brand new truck and my wife said "Go to the exhaust shop and put a louder muffler on this thing ! It sounds like a Prius !!!".

I followed her advice.

Yeah i've been reading about short headers all days and it's about equal to just adding a MIT, for a lot more money. Been watching Matt Earle's video with the XR1 40085/Kooks longtube, i love the WOT sound and warm start is okay. Cold start sounds loud as hell. The rest of it i love.
