2014+ Exhaust Systems & Mufflers

Recommended Posts

I've read through the entire thread, and I've narrowed it down to a muffler delete using stainless pipe (I'm picking up another full 6.2 stock exhaust cheap that I will have in case I don't like sound, and want it to look stock again,) the GM borla, or the GM corsa exhaust that goes on the terrain x equipped trucks.

I have 2 questions. On the delete in some videos I've watched I can hear the flapper making a clanging sound. How prominent is that? My second question is has anyone heard the GM corsa exhaust that goes on the new terrain x trucks?

I'm not wanting loud, just something a little louder than stock that represents the 6.2l better. I'm leaving the afm on, and the GM terrain x exhaust has me worried about the chopper sound a little.

Edit: I just read on Chevy's website where they calibrate the active noise cancelation on the GM corsa exhaust so that might help with the drone/helicopter sound.

is the flapper for back pressure?... and if you delete the muffler , flapper and resonator, would lets say, and 3' in , and a 2 1/4 out be the way to go... for the back pressure?.. not sure how that works.. i love the low end torque on these trucks.

The flapper is solely to stop the v4 chopper sound.

Just stick with 3" straight or 3" in split into dual 2.5" if you want dual exit. That will work great. Back pressure is not your friend necessarily and the stock cats will cause their fair share anyway.

I did the muffler delete on my 6.2 and it sounds good. Shortly after the flapper would rattle occasionally so I had it taken out. I also had the resonator removed but it was too loud so after awhile i put just the resonator back on

I think the resonator helps with the chopper too cause it was worse without it on and now I don't notice it at all

Thanks! How loud was the rattle?

It was loud, like shaking a coin around in an empty can. It was really intermittent though but drove me crazy when it happened

Dealer denied warranty cause I chopped the muffler but I figured that would be the case. It's been fine without it though

Now that you are asking, I can't remember if he did 2.25 or 2.5"? For some reason, 2.25" sticks in my head because of back pressure. Everything else is correct though, from the third cat back was removed (resonator, valve, and muffler). I asked him about removing the third cat and he said it was pointless and would not affect the sound so I just left it.

He has done all my exhaust work over the years so he cut me a little deal. $500 is what I paid out the door. That was for the AT3030, labor, exhaust piping and black chrome tips (which cost a little more than regular chrome). He isn't the best priced in town but his work is truly amazing. He has people travel out of state to get work done by him and is known for building complete systems from scratch for hot rods. I called around and one shop quoted me $700 and another quoted me $450. So for $500, I figured it was worth it because I knew it would be done right.

Southpaw, I just listened to your exhaust bids on YouTube and wrote you on there and then saw you were a member here. Your posts answered most of my questions. I was thinking about doing the same .. Muffler, res delete, y pipe to a dual exit. I'm curious though. With how you did yours if you left the flapper would the chopper sound be eliminated. Reason I'm asking is on my stock exhaust I did that flapper mod where you take a hose clamp and clamp the flapper open. On the stock exhaust its louder on startup and all around driving but obviously nothing like yours or another modified exhaust... Given you now have a good amount of driving time ..how are you still liking it? Is it so loud to attract unwanted attention by the law? All the vids with the 3030 sound awesome so im swaying to that muffler

Hey Jeff, just saw your comment on YouTube and so far I am loving it. It has a nice start up tone (especially when cold) and idle is lopey but not obnoxious. If you look at my build thread you can see how he set it up. He suggested I remove everything except the third cat. If the flapper was left in, I'm sure the chopper noise would be eliminated but I'm glad I took it all off. If you are watching the DIC and see it switch to V4, you will notice. Otherwise, normal driving you would probably not even hear it.

I've definitely got some miles on it now and so far so good. The sound has increased over time in a good way. I have used Aero mufflers on previous trucks and I really don't think you can beat them for the price. I live in a complex and I didn't want it to be ridiculous loud but sometimes I wish it was a tad louder. My '05 1500 had an Aero that was side dumped, so if you are looking for a little more noise, I would do that. To me, they are the perfect muffler. I searched for weeks and listened to every and I mean literally EVERY, exhaust video I could find before I decided to stick with Aero again. I think Corsa would have been my next choice but I wasn't going to spend $900+ and then have to install it myself. Honestly, these trucks aren't very loud even with a straight pipe and I didn't want any cackling or backfire. My 51yo dad thinks the exhaust is a tad loud and said he would probably do the 3030XL (resonated version) on his '15 GMC 1500 but he is old haha.

These two videos (yes I know it's a Ford) sound identical to my truck. A V8 is a V8, both have 8 cylinders so they sound really really similar especially since they are being fed to the same muffler.

Another member here has done us all a great big favor by testing multiple mufflers on his truck. I used his videos as well to make my decision. He has tried many different setups including a Jones 3030 (same as an Aero).

Like I said if I do change to anything, it will be to a Corsa because I wouldn't mind a little extra noise. All in all, if you are looking for some good 'clean' noise, not overly obnoxious loud, cost effective, clean looking (loved the bright finish); Aero will be up your ally.

Thanks SouthPawCO. Those are my videos and I am glad they are helping others. I have the opportunity to test out 3 or 4 others still and hope to add to the video collection in the next few weeks, but they will all be with headers now. If someone really wants to hear one of the new ones with stock manifolds, I might put them back on if I have the time to do so.

I listened to your vids of the exhaust. Very nice in depth videos to get a great idea on what it will sound like in all driving conditions. The aero really has me. What did you think of the 3030? Did you like the 3030 or the xl better w stock manifolds? Was it to loud for you or just enough. I have a 79 Malibu that I'm doing that I don't mind being loud. My dd I want to hear but not make it unbearable after a half hour or attract the attention of the cops

I never tried the XL with stock manifolds, but it would be too quiet for me. The 3030 was just about perfect. It has a low and deep rumble, but will actually get a tad quieter in the upper RPM range to keep from attracting too much attention.

I like them loud though and even the straight pipe was too quiet for me with the stock manifolds and cats.

They are still showing up for me on a quick youtube search of "Silverado AT3030."

I have been meaning to ask you Matt, did you notice a huge difference in noise between the 3030, Corsa and a straight pipe? From your videos, which I know don't really do it justice, they sound pretty similar. What are your thoughts?

Matt , I've been listening to your "2015 Silverado Jones turbine outside drive" video. Were you happy with the exhaust. Meaning it being a single out vs a dual exit. I know if I was to do this doing a single out would be a cheaper route. I figure 100 for the muffler and whatever for piping back and labor. Do you me asking what rough price that was? My thought would be to keep the flapper just to help on the v4 sound ...but not sure if it would totally defeat the purpose. Did you remove the flapper and if so is the v4 very noticeable? I drive in m4 or m5 unless I hit the highway so not worried about the back roads thanks

SouthPawCO I felt the straight pipe and Corsa were similar in that they were quiet down low and got louder in the top end. The Jones was the opposite with a deep tone down low and tapered off on the top.

Jeff5347 I really liked the Jones 3030 single exit. I had all the cats but no resonator or flapper. I rarely hit V4, but when it did, it didn't bother me. eBay had the best deal I could find.
