What do you think of Ram 1500's?

looked at them... pretty decent trucks but I never had good luck with my 01 or 02 Dodges Long term they both simply fell apart where as my GM trucks never have. I will say I think the interior materials in the 14 GM's blow away the Ram but thats a given being the ram is essentially the 09 design. Fit and finish didn't seem as good in the models I tried but it was pretty trivial differences. I'd say if you like the truck better get it!

Coil springs in the rear is a major downer. The truck will ride better with them, but any slight weight at all and it will sag in the rear. Your also going to get significantly more axle wrap from coils over leaf packs. The new Ram's apparently have that air suspension system for lowering the truck at highway speeds for MPG's and then raising it at lower speeds. Honestly, what's the point? All that complexity, added cost and chance of failure just to gain maybe 1 MPG? I am not sure what the source is for the compressed air, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is some oil-free compressor that will burn up in a years time. Personally, I don't like the interior at all, and the body design doesn't appeal to me.

If I had to pick a truck other then a GM, it would be a Ford Super Duty. They have huge amounts of interior space, the dash in the newer trucks is very nice, and they have an aggressive stance right off the lot.

I wouldn't buy a Ford Super duty just because its essentially the same body as the 99's and the rusted out super duties driving around don't say much for them in the long term, JMO...... as far as the coils on the ram a friend had an 8k pound trailer on his with no more sag than his other truck so I don't know on that one.....

I think the Ram diesel V6 made the GM 5.3 obsolete. If you are serious about fuel mileage the 1500 with a diesel is the way to go. My 2011 averages 15 in town and 19 on the road. I believe the Ram gets 25 mpg.

Hah not at the price they're asking- $4000 option in no way competes with a 5.3. That and not everyone loses sleep about fuel efficiency. I'd rather put that $4k into buying a higher trim GM than I otherwise would so I can get the 6.2. The diesel might sip fuel but it's also slow. Not interested.

There are up and downs for the diesel or gas engine.

Diesel engines last long. Usually. BUT when it comes to repairs...jeez.

That's what keeps me away from a diesel.

so long

Dodge probably makes the best over all truck these days.

The 1500 Dodge doesn't come with a plow package.

The common sense design for the driver is just the beginning. The cab has lots more room and is very comfy. If you are a littler guy, that doesn't matter but if you are into the 6 foot range it starts to make a big difference real quick. I like a rear sliding window which isn't available now with GM. I can't see a 6'-6" person being comfortable in a GM 1500 product for any extended cruise time in a regular cab. You can definably have the room to be comfy in a Dodge.

The cons are... and it would be a personal preference thing.. the shift pattern. I hate driving at 10mpg at 2000rpm. The gas mpg probably isn't as good as the 2014 GM models but probably is in line with prior models.

I can get very good mpg out of my 2010 ram 2500 4x4 if I want. The 1500 would have to be better.

Also the Dodge height is the same for 1500 and 2500 4x4 so if lifting heavy things into the back could be a issue of the truck because......you are getting weak because you are turning into a old guy/lol ( which could also be a concern for the interior space /cramping/comfort) the GM product is lower and better for loading for that reason.

I base this all on stock trucks under normal usage. I don't go drag racing so that aspect wouldn't matter to me or things like my truck could pull your truck etc. I intend to use my trucks in a normal manor.

Gutless turds. I owned one... never bother with that crap again. Didn't keep it long enough to deem it problematic or not. Interior was nice and the truck looked and rode well. Mileage was meh.... but i dont care about fuel economy either. But my god as a crew cab with 392 gears in it you could watch paint dry as far as acceleration went. After I lost to a bone stock 200000 mile vortec 350 powered extended cab 4x4 I sold it lol. I will find a video that basically is exactly how I felt about my Ram... guy is "racing" an ecoboost.

I think the new Ram trucks are nice and they've come a long way but I still don't think I'd buy one over a Ford or Chevy. Last year at the auto show when I sat inside a couple of them, I remember one in particular it was a Ram Laramie it just didn't seem to have the same quality as the competition the door didn't solid like the F-150 or my my Sierra when I closed it and my truck is an 05. I just don't see myself buying one but my coworker has a 2012 Ram 1500 and he really seems to like it.

you are truly concerned about power, real power is torque, the 5.3 has 325 lb of torque and the Ram V6 has 425 lbs of torque. While you may not care about economy, most of us do. The 5.3 is a terrible excuse for economy. Diesels are much cleaner, faster, and quieter than ever before. My son has a 6.2 motor and gets 12 mpg when its very cold. He is not a happy driver either.

Diesels can make good power but I've seen what this motor does in a lighter Grand Cherokee and I'm not impressed.

Brother in law has a dodge and likes it. He also has owned fords and Chevys. His current pickup is a crew cab 1500, Dodge and while I think the bed is to small, it rode well, the seats and layout was good, he said it gets the job done. I have also owned three Mopar vehicles, 1999 jeep Cherokee, 2005 Dodge grad minivan, and a 2008 Chrysler Town and Country minivan. All were pretty good, and did fine for us as a family.
