New to the forum with some serious truck issues

Recommended Posts

Hi My name is Bryon and I'm from So Calif I just bought a 2014 Silverado LTZ 5.3L and have put over 250 miles already, the issue I'm having is that when driving the truck I can smell a burnt oil smell in the cab and when I stop the smell gets stronger I'm taking it in to the dealer tomorrow and will post results. The main reason for this post is to find out are there others who are having or have had this same issue or am I an isolated case. I did read a topic with someone having this issue and the end result was them taking the dealers word that this was normal? now I've had a few new truck and cars in the past 35+ years and never had I had this issue.

Thanks for the reply I worked in the refinery business for 26yrs and have had the unfortunate pleasure of smelling burning oil when it hit something very hot gives off VOC's that are very unmistakable. Keeping fingers, toes and eyes crossed also hoping its not major or there's hell to pay.... lol sounds good anyways.

Sure you're not smelling antifreeze? Some guys are smelling antifreeze when the heater is on due to a faulty heater core.

Good luck and let's hope it nothing major

Went to the dealer and as mentioned in another thread I was informed that the truck was dipped for rust proofing and possibly this is burning off ?. The service guy said to drive it for 1000 miles then if the smell doesn't go away then bring it back, I have crawled all over/under looking for leaks and cant see any. Just have never had this before and will keep all informed on what happens after 1000miles.

Thanks for the response Roswell.

Was the rustproofing sprayed on before you got the truck? The factory wax dip on the frame should leave no burning smell. New trucks and carsdo have a strong initial odor for a few hundred miles. Smelt this on many many new GM cars, not just trucks. The shop stinks when they are PDI'ed.

I have now smelled this "oil" smell you have mentioned. I have not smelled it in my cab; but when I pulled into my garage, I could smell it. I just chalk it up as the "new car" smell burning off. I've smelled this in other vehicles I have owned in the past. The smell will eventually go away.

I had the same smell but not as bad. After 600 miles the smell has diminished but not completely gone away. My dealer said the same thing to me and asked me to give it 1000 miles. I am pretty sure once I get there the smell will be gone. My wife says she cannot smell it at all anymore.

You also stated you are having serious issues. I only see the one issue. What are the others?

When I first bought my wifes 13 Malibu LTZ with the the 2.0ltr turbo, that car had a bad burning something smell when you shut it off. Later I found out it was a heat shield around the exhuast kind of like dynomat and it was cooking off some the adhesive. It no longer does it.

I go through this every time I change the oil in my motorcycles. Some oil drips on the exhaust headers when I remove the oil filter. Then it takes several minutes of riding to get rid of the burning oil smell.

I've noticed a few different smells coming off my truck, but I recognize most of them as the rust preventative from hot parts and paint cooking off or plastic out gassing, it's similar to what happen at work when equipment first firedup on the assembly line. I've even written into the process instructions to watch the color of the paint on the manifold & call the engine tech if it doesn't discolor evenly.

  • 2 months later...

Just took delivery in Va of 2014 Silverado 5.3 liter with 25 miles on odometer. Test drive went fine, Great Truck, but sounds like a common issue. No smell on test drive about a mile from home I thought I started smelling burning oil but not too bad until I got into driveway and then the wife started smelling it too (strong smell in cab). I work on vehicles, Race Chevrolet vehicles and it is definitely a burning oil smell like if something is leaking onto exhaust, manifolds. I visually inspected for leaks, oil filter , valve cover, drain plug anything that could be leaking. Nothing on the ground. Nothing found..... Again this must be a common issue since so many are having this problem. We'll see if after a few hundred miles it goes away, and keeping a close eye on the oil levels. Any updates appreciated... its a little noxious smelling in the cab while driving. Crossing fingers.
