How does the new Tailgate Assist work?

Recommended Posts

All I can tell you is without that little part behind the taillight the tailgate drops like a rock. My belief is it's all in that part.

Thanks for the link. Also, that is excellent looking truck. Very clean, great color.

It's standard equipment at least that's what it says on the window sticker.

Not standard on Silverado WT trim level.

I would prefer a Truck Tailgate Hideaway System if it was available any day. No need for corner bumper steps and drops the tailgate and gets it out of the way. It seems with the high prices they are demanding for these trucks now a days, I can't see why GM can't offer this system instead.

If they don't have the tailgate assist on your WT version they will probably never have the power gate your looking at on there. It would be a Denali/High Country option. Plus with some people already complaining about the bed sides being to high now. It you look they had to raise the bed a few inches to install that gate.

I think they lowered the bumper, rather than raising the bed.

Check the depressions in the sheet metal relative to the ends of the bumper.

Ingenious, but I wonder how it would be in the winter in the north?

Thank you... We must both have that "Trucker" mentality because we like chrome LOL. I went from a black 2013 extended cab to the 14 Crew and luv it. The truck came with color matching mirror caps and door handles and I just swapped the black for the chrome window sweeps and added side body moldings. Just enough bling... anymore would overdue it I believe.

I believe the tailgate assist is only torsion bar (mechanical) built into the tailgate with different connections. I don't think there is any electrical power to it. Correct me if I am wrong because I don't have this system.

You could add power to anything by adding it to the original wiring harness or add on to the existing wire harness in other fashions. The cut outs etc. in the truck frames are the same so I don't see any issues putting the Truck Tailgate Hideaway System on any trim levels as an option or standard equipment. The price can't cost too much etc. The truck already comes with a tailgate and connections. The additional cost is in the wiring (connections), power source (motor) and maybe the frame brackets to pull in and out the tailgate.

People on this site added power steps to their trucks and they claim they did not have any issues with closing or dropping these steps during the winter months. So if the truck frame opening for the tailgate is added or needed can be done to all trucks it is just simple wiring connection, motor or power source, some metal/bracket parts and power enough to handle this system. As you can see on the video - the truck being used was a work truck or low trim level. It does appear they lower the rear bumper in the video and I don't know about if it affected the spare tire. I don't have the specs to say otherwise.

I believe you are correct. These is no power supply for the assist to lower the tailgate slowly. As for build into the tailgate I believe not. See the following link.

Wouldn't they have to raise the bed up since it sits pretty close to the frame rails? I doubt there is enough space for the the gate to tuck under by just lowering the bumper a few inches.

If you do it please keep us posted on part numbers and results. I may do this myself. I have an WT or now called a LS trim level w/o the Tailgate Assist.

Hello, i wonder if anyone was able to istall the rod inside the tailgate and what parts needs for WT trim besides rod itself.

I recently injured my shoulder and lifting tailgate with one hand became a bit problem for me

Mine did as well but I had it replaced under warranty. There is some spec you can search for that says something like the amount of seconds it should take before opening fully. If faster than spec they should replace it

I've been watching the new truck commercials and have been seeing the soft open tailgate. I don't see the extra support bracket that all of the after market ones have. Did I just miss it or is the factory version something different?

Mike

Here is what I found to be the item that slowly drops the tailgate. I found this when I installed my Gatekeeper 2 years ago. This is on my 2014 Silverado on the curb side. When this piece was remove the tailgate dropped like a rock. I needed to remove the 2 bolts to install the gate keeper.
