Range Technology V8 AFM Disable Module

Recommended Posts

yea but saying that keeping the truck in V8 mode all the time is gonna hurt something is just dumb...its a V8. It'll run at V8 mode all day for its entire life no problem if it wanted to.

GM Should have allowed us to switch it on and off. Just like int he new Vettes, drivers can control when AFM is on or off. Im pretty sure the Chrysler version of AFM on the 300C has a selectable mode as well.

*edit* the 6.4-Liter V8 HEMI® Eng w / Fuel Saver Technology uses cylinder deactivation technology when the vehicle is in "Fuel Saver Mode" otherwise it is turned off. Also the Ram can turn the Eco Mode on and off.

Agreed I'm not saying using V8 all the time will hurt anything. I'm just saying Chevy won't disable AFM just because we don't like it. They designed the truck to be on all the time and they aren't going to modify their design at the consumer's request. It would have to be manufactured that way like the Vette. I agree I wish there was a switch to turn it on and off and let us decide if we want to use it or not. But of course that's asking too much.

We really should blame the government/EPA. They're the reason trucks aren't what they used to be as far as quality and performance goes, not the manufacturers.

If it is still under warranty and they fixed it so it full time runs on all 8 then it would still be under warranty AS long as Chevrolet service department did it.

I have my doubts that the dealer will "fix" anything outside the specs.

When money is coming out of my pocket it is under my terms and my terms only. I do not compromise.

I worked way to hard for my dollars and I will not settle. That is the attitude I take in any business transaction. I will pay for what I want BUT I will not pay for what I do not.

I'm totally with on on that matter. But even hard earned money can't buy everything.

They can report all they want.

I would simply use that range device as well if it didnt cost money. It is all about the Benjamins. I am not paying for a device to hack something that I bought because it is not working as I bought it to work.

If the range were free, I would easily go that route. I would never expect that company to just give me something they worked so hard for, so... I won't be buying it.

Again, back to what I said. If I decide that I do not like the AFM I promise you all that I WILL get the service department to do it for free.

I got VW service to turn off my DRL using the VagCom software. They told me it cannot be done. Funny thing, they did it. :)

News Flash ! No dealer can turn AFM off! Dealers can only program and update PCM's with software from GM. Better by a VW pickup

Authorized versus able to are 2 different things.

Anyone with the software package provided by GM to tap into the computer and program stuffs has the ability to disable any of the systems they want to. Every dealer CAN although probably will be pretty hard to convince one to do it. Flick of a mouse on a computer screen attached to the computer in the truck could change ALL sorts of things.

Oh and since you are teaching me stuff, tell me where in the US I can find a VW pickup truck? Please.

You're early over-estimating what GM dealers have the ability to do. The level of customization attainable on VWs with their software is extremely unique. We have several members here who work in dealers or at the very least have extensive knowledge of GM systems. If it were possible, someone would've done it by now.

I don't get why you would by the V8 module when you can just run the truck in M5 and have it V8 all the time. If you need M6 you are on the highway and it will likely not use V4 mode. Now that said, I'll take the 40% increase in MPG even if I do tune the motor. People who think the V8 mode will stop the oil issues have no clue how the system works. It bleeds the oil to run V8, not to run V4.

The problem is the switching between V4 and V8 mode.

Not the staying in one of them.

Next is the driveability.

It is already hard for GM's 6 speed to choose the right gear.

But with the switching between the two modes it gets totally confused.

When I was in the mountains in North Carolina I used Tow-Haul mode to stop the shifts from jumping as much when I was going for it. I didn't know about the M5 keeping it in V8 mode and would like to go back and try the two different options. Either way no need to buy the V8 range and no reason to tune out the AFM when you already have a stock setting to deactivate it. Then next with a tune you can modify things to improve it further, no need to turn it off. If you drive around looking for the best MPG you will find that you can get better returns a few MPH higher of a certain speed because it shifts to soon and it's not high enough in the revs. Changing the shifting can help this a lot. I'm sure there is some power and MPG both to be gained just in the cam phasing for us without emissions testing.

On my way to work I'm driving a few km on a road with a 70 km/h (~ 45 m/h) speed limit.

The engine is constantly switching between V4 and V8 mode.

That causes the trans to go in and out with the converter clutch and/or 6. and 5. gear.

And I want to drive 70 km/h in sixth gear and not in fifth.

Hey everybody, my name is Roger and I recently was hired to work with the people at Range Technology. If you have any questions about either device (the AFM Disabler and the AFM-Plus) the FAQs on their site are excellent and will give you the answers what you're looking for (www.rangetechnology.com) Keep driving good people!

There are tuners out that can hide the tune, you can revert back to stock if you feel you need to. I've had 5 cars tuned by a well known tuner, currently have a 13 malibu 2.0 liter turbo tuned the car dyno'd at 319 HP with 335 foot pounds of tq (rear wheel). Drives amazing, and soon as the 14 silverado is ready it will be tuned also. I live by the motto "no risk, no reward" .

Just hate to see people throw their money away on snake oil.

Mike

No one is hiding any tunes.. GM uses a counter that can counts each time the ECM is flashed, it is not something that any tuner in a box or even a dyno/laptop can defeat. I have been there, done that with my Camaro. The dealer, who is a friend of mine even showed me the time and date the ECM was last flashed. That said, I ordered a Range for my 2014 Silverado, AFM sucks..

If the range works as advertised, and I know there are about 10 satisfied customers in my Camaro club, its money well spent in my book. YMMV..

I wanted to share my experience with the Range AFM delete device. I used it for one month and it threw a code and it was a Service Stabilitrak and Service brake assist. the dealer said that nothing was wrong but it was noted as Missing history and they did ask if I plugged anything into the port. I think they are catching on to this stuff... BTW I left the Range at home and not in the console. I did tell Caitie at Range about this and she did say i had the latest greatest program but she told me to send it back and they would be happy to look at it.

Hi Roger. I have a question. Can I have one for FREE? haha. Oh well , worth a try. But seriously, when funds allow the AFM delete is first on my list. It looks like you guys make a great product.

Do you see in the future if an on/off selectable option is in the works? If so, can I be the test rabbit? It would be nice to just click it on or off for highway use.

Oh by the way ,(www.rangetechnology.com) would look perfect across the front windshield or back glass. HINT, HINT. I have no shame haha.

It is the lifters that worry me. The system allows the lifters to collapse. Just saw a 2010 sub get a new rebuilt 5.3 because of lifters.

It was more cost effective to replace the engine than to tear the old one down for lifters. 23 hour job for lifters. Paid a little more but got a rebuilt engine. They suspect the afm causing the lifters to fail. IF I buy another GM the afm will be off from the first day.
