HP Tuners can tune the ECM and the TCM already on the new trucks.

I will be looking under my truck in the coming weeks and try to get a game plan on sorting out my exhaust as well. Right now my list of things is Tires, window tint, exhaust mods, then CAI kit and then decide if I am going to tune the truck or not.

TJ, another thing I'm looking for desperately is a CAI system. Have you seen any yet for the 6.2?

Yea Mike, when I was on the Hummer Forum, you weren't sh-- if you didn't have a Blackbear Tune. I drove to Charlotte to PCM for Less and had mine done, the H3, and later the '12 Silverado 5.3. We just don't have anyone around Montgomery who does performance tunes, at least no one I would trust with my new Deanli 6.2. Blackbear's method is you use the Auto Cal device you purchase from them, plug it in to the truck and download the factory settings, then you plug into your computer, download that info, answer a few other questions and email all that to Justin at Blackbear. He then modifys the file, customized per your request, and sends the file back to you, You then upload it to your truck and magic happens. My problem with all that, I am not that good with computers and electronics, so I personally, I am a little intimidated by such an involved method. I do know numerous guys personally, who swear by the Blackbear tune. Me personally, I like to drive into a tuner, give him a couple hours with my truck, and when he gives it back to me, it is everything I imagined and then some. That's the way I did the last two vehicles with PCM for Less at Charlotte. I am definitely going to have mine tuned, just don't know what method I'm gong to use yet.

I'm the same way as you, I'd rather get some dyno time. I posted a video on here of my 2010 camaro being tuned aftert I put the magnason supercharger on it. Not sure if it was this thread, but it was in regards to solo exhaust. In all my years I've never heard of black bear, I'm a big Chevy performance guy, just can't say I've heard of them.

I don't know their history either Mike. I first heard of them on the Hummer forum in '06 or '07. I have never had any dealings with them, although I have communicated with them about tuning my Denali. During my Hummer days, they were obtaining info from you on your vehicle, programing and tuning a PCM and sending it to you for a fee plus a core charge. Then you swap your PCM and send it back to Black Bear for core charge credit, or you could keep both if you chose. Now they have the Auto Cal which is light years ahead of swapping PCMs, but a little scary for me. Electronics and technology scares me. I'm a serious baby boomer who panics at the thought of becoming involved with new technology. I still remember the life changing event of buying my first computer in '98.

I'm sure there are some guys on here who know as much or more about Blackbear Performance Tuning than I do. For general info, they also travel to major metropolitan areas each year and do an appointment only tuning session. I understand appointments are sometimes hard to come by for one of these sessions. That would be the ideal situation for me if the dominos ever fell just right. As close as they ever get to me is Atlanta, Ga.

My Vette was modified and tuned by Extreme Motorsports in Blountstown, Fl. I spent a day and a half with them and watched every step. It was pretty interesting, especially the dyno and the results. We never went inside the engine, but got 420 hp, 356 to rear wheels. Factory was 297 to the rear wheels.

Well got the truck by the shop today, no way to get a muffler on the new 6.2's yet. No one is making a 3.5" center to offset muffler yet. I did have the shop weld the exhaust pressure valve open. It is only there to quell the exhaust noise down while under part throttle. It was a little bit deeper rumble at idle and light part throttle, could tell a little difference in power delivery at part throttle as well.

No that is the super quite muffler and is the same size as the stock one. I am wanting the 14" or 18" long one and they don't make it in a 3.5" in/out center/offset yet.

The factory setup is funky as heck to.

I think Airaid is offering one, waiting on K&N to see what they offer as well.

Thanks TJ, I think I have seen it on the web. I really don't care much for Air Raid anyway. I'm also not sure it is for the 6.2. I first bought an Air Raid for my H3 Hummer, but it was worthless. I trashed it and purchased a GM High performance Air Intake. It had a chrome tube similar to K&N but the filter sat in a chrome box with the open end sealed against the fender opening. It was a great system, albeit super expensive. I too would like to wait for the K&N. I had one on my Silverado I sold to get this Denali. I would be happy to have the identical system again.

Airaid is not bad, I would say they are on par with K&N. I contact Airaid yesterday, as of now they don't have an actual part # for the 6.2 trucks. They had a customer put the 5.3 setup on a 6.2 truck and said it worked fine so they may not have to change the current setup to fit the 6.2 trucks.

At this point I am waiting to see what K&N offers and the price points and how the system looks/works.

  • 3 weeks later...

So, this is my first post here and since the exhaust is the first mod I've done to my new truck, I thought I'd throw in my $.02...

I removed the stock muffler, flapper & resonator. Added a Flowmaster 50 and, viola! Sounds like a truck is supposed to. It's got a mellow tone, very mild drone at 1750 rpm but the truck very rarely sits at 1750 so, overall I'm pretty darn happy with the result.

Way cheaper than the cat back twice pipe systems I originally considered and, unless you replace the manifolds w/headers and those 3 lovely cats get s-canned, there's not much performance to be had beyond cat #3. For me, it was all about getting some burble out of that small block.

Good to see more people are jumping on the band wagon. I thought I would be satisfied with this but I'm still wanting more ha ha. I'm going to cut the valve and the back muffler off as well and put a super 44 and a nice 3.5" rolled tip. Now that I have my diablo intune I have the afm disabled so I'm not worried about drone anymore. I went to the dealer yesterday to have my bcm updated and they said I need some sort of a muffler to keep warranty so I had to either leave the back resonator/muffler on or put my stock one back on and get rid of the rear one. I said I would just put a little race muffler on and cut everything else off and they laughed and said that was fine as long as they saw some form of a muffler. I'm doing my exhaust again on Friday so I will post another update after it's done. The muffler and the Magnaflow tip only cost 85 dollars so it's still way way cheaper than a bought cat back.

Thanks

Will

What is the most porous, straight thru, joke of a muffler that flows the most we can put in place of our muffler that is the most free flowing/least restrictive and still count as a muffler?

Has anyone tried just removing the rear resonator, leaving the main muffler in?

I did this exact thing, and even cut 32" off as well, and little to no difference whatsoever, my next mod is deleting the muffler and flapper valve.....

I have started to notice a spitting type sound on occasion under part throttle that sounds like a tarp flapping in the rear. I am wondering if it is the rear flapper valve?

Mine too
