4.88's too much for my transfer case?

Hmm mine is like a deep, loud howl. I guess it depends on what kind of boat motor you listen to cause mine is kind of high pitched haha.

The guy who looked at it said that if the front diff. was actually that loud you would hear something wrong by just turning it by hand. Not sure how true that is. I just don't want to keep throwing parts at it and put me in the hole a couple grand before I figure what it is. Maybe I can try installing the old front differential and seeing if the noise goes away? Only thing is I can't engage 4wd to check for the noise if it isn't there in 2wd

Well I put the shaft back in, marked two different points, and drove around in 2wd for a couple miles. Got back and checked it out. It definently moved. Realigned it and tried it again. Same thing happened. Any ideas?

I don't know I didn't set them up. With the front shaft out the rear is smooth as glass and no sounds. Everyone keeps saying the transfer case is where the noise is coming from, because we had it up on the lift yesterday and were under it listening to it in 2 and 4wd. But can't the sound actually get louder the further it is from the source?

The front diff. is smooth when you turn it by hand. But then again it ain't no 2k rpm's. As far as backlash I'm not sure of the exact measurement

Yep, vibration will travel throughout the driveline and usually ends up in the transfer case because it's chain drive it will soak up most of the vibration. If the transfer case was fine before gears it's probly fine now. Take it back to those idiots and tell them to fix it. And learn how to shim gears properly.

Or take it somewhere else.

If it's quiet without the front driveshaft in, that narrows it down pretty good lol. Did you increase in height at all? Mine vibrates in 4x4 because the front slip yolk isn't in all the way because of the lift. Causes vibration in the front driveshaft, but if all was fine before the gears and you didn't go any higher it's probably the gear lash set up improperly but if you went higher with it you could have the same problem I had. Front shaft will need to e lengthened and it's wise to incorporate a CV joint in it. That will solve that issue.

But I'm aiming towards gears.

Went up in height a little bit but on this lift the angles on everything are basically flat. And if its still turning even with the front shaft not in (the transfer case) then it would still be making the noise right?

Also I swapped the t case and same sound was there. I don't think either of the cases were bad

I'm gonna take it to the shop and tell em to replace the transfer case since that's what they think it is. When it turns out that isn't the problem they can spend their money and not have me be out a good chunk of change

First I'll see how much they want and then talk to them about the "what if that doesnt solve the problem?" question. Cause I dont want a new tcase if I dont need one, and since there is already fluid in the tcase, they would have to reimburse me for that, as well as the front gasket where it attaches to the transmission coupler, so they would have to buy 2 gaskets and 4 quarts of auto-trak II fluid as well as remove my front diff and rebuild it and possibly even have to buy new bearings and gear set if it got messed up, which hopefully it didn't.

Watch, they will try and charge me for labor to remove the differential because I brought it in as a loose diff. but I'll just tell em they should have set it up properly the first time and yall wouldnt have to deal with me keep coming back haha

Or if I can prove to them that it is the front diff. and they didnt set it up properly and dont do so again the second time, I'll just get my money back and run it over to the dealership. That is the only decent place I have found that can fix the problem the first time. Besides, they rebuilt the rear (bearings and axles, overloaded so it bent the axles) when my dad had the truck, at about 150k miles, and it has been quiet until I managed to blow it up at 308k haha

I'm gonna put a mark on this transfer case and see if they actually swap it or not. I just don't want to pay again for their mess up so I will give them another shot at rebuilding it. If it still don't work out I'm going to try and get my money back and take it somewhere else
