2014 9.76" Axle Info Requested

Recommended Posts

I have been unable to find any info on this axle. Has this been used before on GM products? I'm mainly interested in what aftermarket lockers/limited slips may be available for it (not a huge fan of the G80). I know there are tons available for the standard 9.5" but right now the 3.73's only come in the 9.76" with the max trailer package.

Thanks

Axle is new. I don't know on shared components with past designs though. I'm with you on the G80 being garbage though. I was hoping to see GM step up like Ford and offer a proper locker on this generation.

Thanks. I was sort of afraid of that. I opted for the 9.5", it's a proven design and is plenty big for the amount I'm going to be towing. I'll just put a gear swap higher on the mod list.

Unless the 9.76" is similar to a Dana 60 design... they are all AAM now but still. I do believe the 9.5" is the same rear they have used since 1979 however now the rear cover only has 12 bolts holding it in and not 14.

I know this post is old but has anyone found any more information on the 9.75 axles? So far no luck on finding any gearing options and no email responses from any of the gear manufacturers. I wonder if I screwed my self by getting GM's HD axle.

I wouldn't say you screwed yourself, but you may need to be a bit more patient on aftermarket support. It's capitalism at its best. If there's no demand, why invest in development of new products? I dare say that most 3.73 owners are happy with their choice and don't need more performance...whatever that means (speed, pull, mpg, etc.). Add to this that very few NHT's were sold...and you'll probably have a loooong wait on the aftermarket.

But don't forget, those suggestions of a higher ratio gear swap for the 9.5" are correct in that you'll reap the benefits of a higher ratio, ie torque multiplication, etc., but higher ratio also = weaker ring/gear set. So if you have a workable ratio, stick with what you have or suffer the consequences. The reason GM went to 9.75" rear end w/ 3.73:1 ratio is the additional "meat" available with the larger ring. It offsets the increase in ratio and associated loss of material.

Ok, I used harsh words. You're right, I just have to be patience. And yes, I'm happy the 3.73 even with 35". It's still punchy so I can't complain.

I talked to AAM(who makes the axle) at SEMA. They said that in time they will have gears available

Good suggestion, I'll see what kind of ETA they are looking at.

I saw that post too but that's geared towards the 9.5. And I don't personally have enough gear experience (helped swapped gears out numerous times in the past) and I'm not sure if the local shops have enough experience to figure a good working option like Yukon did for the 9.5.
